so I was wondering if you ever had the timing belt break on you and how many miles where on the belt

Never heard of it breaking for anyone. Camry has non-interference engine so unless it breaks on very high speed your car wouldn't hurt bad or if any at all.

 

Mine broke about 40k ago. 120k on the belt as far as I know plus whatever it had before I got it

 

Suggestion

I wouldn't wait past 90-100k. Start saving money :ugh3:

 

Heard of a few belts breaking on Camry, but very few. Replaced one that had 120K, no problem. Your mileage may depend on how hard you drive the engine. Rapid acceleration of the engine has to be harder on a belt. Plus oil leaks from seals, etc.

If you have someone else change it, shop around for prices first.

 

just make sure you get it done. you dont want to take the chance. yo can go over 60K, they manufacturer just wants to give a safe guidelineas to when to replace the belt. i have less than 60K on my new belt and it was replaced at 65K. i've got 50k on the belt and i'll replace the belt around 130K or sooner if i get the gumption.

mine broke gen 3
was at 180k, but i dunno if the previous owner changed it
it is a hassle and towing, etc.. not worth it. So get it fixed if u have $$ or start saving up

Not sure about the 60K miles. It depends on the car and year. Check your instructions and don't trust the advice from dealers (unless there is actually a real issue to be addressed immediately).

Changed mine at 103K miles recently (had my '00 from new, bought in '99) and it looked very good - no cracks or worn areas. The other belts also looked fine. I gather all could have lasted longer but at this point piece of mind become important, so I gave in and changed it... I had noticed that the outside belts had losened a little making occasional noises in the morning, so instead of changing I could have tightened them a little to get rid of the noise for another few thousand miles before chainging. On older Gen 4 the recommended interval is shorter than the recommended 90K for the '00, I think, so I do not know if they would be equally durable...

 

My daughter did on her 99, but it was caused by the water pump locking up....I had just had the belt replaced, like 10k before!...That sucked!....So consider replacing the WP at the time you get you T-belt done.

I'm pretty sure the first timing belt replacement on a gen4 is at 90K miles.

I was driving a friend's gen1 Camry years agoand the timing belt broke (I was on the freeway at the time). I just coasted to a stop on the shoulder. Called AAA, towed it to the repair shop, changed the belt and was good to go. That car has 130K miles.

 

For Gen 4, the maintenance interval for the timing belt is 90 thousand miles. So far I've gone 78 thousand miles and no breakage yet. I'm sure it should last more than 90000 miles because otherwise, Toyota would not suggest that interval.

I think it had less than 100k but close...this car was run to "death" before she finally totaled it! Heres pics of it in the JK....thank god she wasn't hurt!
