Anyone ever have any issues installing a TRD wing spoiler on a Camry?

Title says it all. I have a 2024 Camry XSE and I'm trying to install a TRD wing spoiler on the trunk.

I've talked to several Toyota Authorized Bodyshops and they have all cautioned me that the trunk for the Camry TRD was custom made to support the spoiler, and that if they try to drill into the trunk lid, due to its thinness, it could cause damage that can't be fixed.

This is a bit puzzling for me, because there are several videos on youtube (here and here) as well as a few posts within ToyotaNation (here and here) where people have asked about it.

So just to clarify, 1) Has anyone tried to put a TRD wing spoiler on a "regular" Camry and 2) If so, did you have any issues? 3) If not, do you know what the procedure was for drilling? (if possible).

Thanks.
Toyota lists several different part numbers for the trunk lid itself- and the TRD model has one that is specific (64401-06A90)- at least for the 2021 model year- which should be similar to yours.

I don't think that the trunk lid itself would be any different- other than the holes that are likely pre-drilled for the spoiler. There might be different springs in the trunk to handle the extra weight of the TRD spoiler compared to the XSE one though. With that said, on non-TRD models, Toyota has a different trunk lid part number for vehicles that have the Smart Key system compared to the ones that don't have that feature, and then a different part number for whether or not the vehicle has a spoiler or not- plus the TRD one that I mentioned... so I suppose there might be more differences than it seems.

The body shops are probably just a bit anxious to do this work because you do have to be very careful when drilling into the trunk- as the metal is surprisingly thin and it is very easy to damage the trunk lid when drilling. You could also have the problem of what to do about the existing holes for your XSE spoiler- as my guess is that they might not be used- and would leave an opening that water could easily get into the trunk and cause hassles. Between the liability of damaging a $750 trunk lid (plus the cost of paint) and the liability of water intrusion down the road, my guess is that the shops probably don't think that the profit that they would make on the install would be worth the risk of doing the job.

I installed a factory spoiler on my 2021 Accord- and it wasn't hard- but I also didn't have to deal with the holes from a previous spoiler. Drilling into that thin metal was challenging- and Honda actually calls for you to use a specific drill bit to prevent damage. They called for a Rotabroach bit to do the drilling and then using a deburring tool to get rid of any metal shavings- and then to use touch up paint to cover the bare metal in the holes before installing the spoiler itself. Honda actually includes different trunk springs with the spoiler kit, as a little extra 'oomph' is needed to open the trunk with the added weight of the spoiler- and the spoiler that Honda uses is a lot smaller and likely lighter weight compared to the one that the Camry TRD uses.

Good luck. I'm not sure if my answer was helpful- but maybe :)
