Just picked up 12 Highlander SE for wife.

Looking for anyone who has successfully installed aftermarket radio in non-limited model that has Apple car play.

I have the following questions.

What is the best kit?
I was looking into pioneer and wanted the largest screen possible I think it’s 6.9”.
Does everything integrate?
Bluetooth?
Steering Controls?
Reverse Camera?
Does it work on small screen or will it come on new radio?

Thank You!

Crutchfield.com is going to be your best option here. I just installed a Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX head unit with the iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR Interface Module and I now have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as steering wheel controls. The Maestro unit also gives you the ability to access some OBDII data and change some factory settings from the head unit like you would with Toyota's Tech Stream software. You can shop by vehicle and add in your options and preferences for a system and they will tell you everything you need. Not going to be cheap though if you want all the features. Backup camera shows on the radio screen for me, but mine is a 2013 limited.

I have an Alpine iLx-107 and it was in my 2003 RAV4 and is going into my 08 Highlander w/JPL next week when Santa brings my idata metro RR unit.
Here are my experiences with aftermarket and OEM units on a 2019 BMW, a 2020 Corolla, and a few other cars.
It is the easiest way to live with an iPhone and car radios.

HOWEVER each manufacturer has their own touches. On one unit, the CarPlay screen had Fm/Am/XM controls in an app. So if you wanted to listen to a sporting event, youdid not have to leave the CarPlay system.

On another unit, it was a mess, you had to almost unplug the phone to get to the radio, or fiddle with the radio knobs to hunt for the station and hope to god you didn’t start playing something on the phone.
Here’s one more tip, if you get in and out of the car a lot, find something that has wireless CarPlay, that’s why I went with the alpine 107. A year or two ago, it was the only aftermarket CarPlay system around.
It also has a nice Siri button on the driver side of the head unit for the few times “hey Siri” doesn’t work.

You would remove the entire radio. Here is a link to a place selling just the bezel. If you bought a radio with the bezel you could sell the radio to offset the cost.

I installed JVC with Google Auto and Apple garbage. All I needed is a double din bezel. And nothing else.

What kind of radio are you installing? I installed an Android radio and spliced into the radio harness for the steering wheel controls. I also used the factory backup camera, but I had to buy a voltage converter. If you're using a regular aftermarket radio then go to Crutchfield and look for it. Once you put your car info in it will tell you what harness you need to use the backup camera and steering wheel controls. Pretty easy going that route.

Ok what wires do i need to wire into for backup camera to show on new radio? The wires need to be tapped into the multipurpose display? I am in between radios right now but want something with apple car play and the largest size I can fit in the 13 bezel. What size is the screen of your new radio soulsurvives?
