I have been fighting with my dealer and toyota to fix an annoying vibration that occurs between 1900 and 2400 rpm. They have installed new cab mounts, motor mounts and adjsuted many things. It has been going on for 6 months and 6000miles. So I decided to test drive another one, it was 2006 trd double cab just like mine and it did the same thing. I was able to talk to the dealer tech who was working on my truck all the way along. He told me that since I pointed the vibration out to him( the toyota mechanic) he hasn't been in one yet that doesn't vibrate unless it has a manual tranmission. He is indicating that this is an engineering concern. But the only way the engineers will look into it is if a lot of people complain. So I encourage you to pay extra close attention when you are between 1900-2400 rpm under slight to moderate load if you have a 4.0l and the automatic. The only gear I don't notice it in is first. It is by no means a severe vibration, I find it most noticable when my hand is a t the 12 oclock position on the wheel and it can be felt through the gas pedal. Toyota customer service has told me it may be normal. Normal on a 40000.00 dollar truck my %##. Maybe at some point it will be addressed.

Strange

I've had mine for almost a year now and have 17K+ miles on it. I've hauled motorcycles in the bed, pulled trailer, and had both a bike in the bed and a @4500 lb trialer behind it and never noticed any sort of vibration. I'll try and check again when I drive it this evening, but I've never noticed up til now.

I might be wrong, but I have not felt any vibration except for those damn freeway seams out here in California. I've driven very smooth blacktop roads at the speeds you describe, and have not noticed this. Mine is an automatic. I'll sure give it another listen/feel just to make sure.

Got to say if there is one guy here who would be hollering if his truck did that it is me but if we mean the same thing by "vibration" I have to say my 4.0L 5 spd auto doesn't do it. Have to be honest and say no when I don't have any problems as well as "whine" (;))when I do.

Of course 99% of the time on the highway I am in CC anyway so my foot isn't on the gas. Glad to say that is one issue my Tacoma does not appear to have.

Damn, now I will be paranoid about it and look for it like the tech. :ugh3:

Vibration

Drove a '91 toyota pickup for many years. Just bought an '06 Tacoma (DC, auto, 4WD). Same night I picked it up I noticed a vibration. Seems to only happen in first and second gear, and seems noticeable once engine/tran is fully warmed up. I have not yet taken to the dealer. Want to drive another and see if it acts the same. If so, might just be the way they are. If that's the case, I'm pretty disappointed. I don't remember it behaving that way when I test drove it, but maybe it never got warm enough or I was too busy paying attention to other details.

Is it a whirling vibration that matches vehicle speed? If you have a 4x4 it's probably normal. I've seen this before in other 4x4's throughout the years. I think it's just slack in the driveline between the transfer case and the front diff. If it goes away when you engage 4x4 this is a tell tale sign. I drove a couple Nissans overseas that had and did the same thing, but it varied from vehicle to vehicle. We had two trucks both the same year one had a small vib one didn't, both ran great though and they both had close to 200,000 Km on them. When we put them in 4x4 adding tension to the front driveline the vibes went away.
It's not axle wrap, you'd really notice that. Axle wrap is an unwanted change in pinion angle, which usually sounds like a big thud. It can also cause a lot of damage.

I have an 05 Tacoma (TRD Sport DC Auto - 8k miles) that exhibits three different types of vibration.

First is the shake or shudder when accelerating from a stop at medium to heavy throttle while in 2wd (no vibration while in 4hi). Someone mentioned rear "axle wrap". That is probably the cause of this type of vibration (torque causes rear axle to "wrap" or rotate slightly against the force of the rear springs and suspension when accelerating, causing the pinion angle to change and cause this type of vibration). I don't think it is caused by slop in the 4wd system, as most of the front drive system does not even rotate when it is not engaged.

Second is an engine vibration from about 1700RPM to about 2200RPM. I can feel it in the steering wheel - it's like a buzzing feeling. It's really noticeable when driving on the freeway at about 65MPH or about 1800 RPM on the tach.

Third is a shimmy in the steering wheel and also felt in the seat caused by the tires being slightly out of balance or out of round. I've had the tires road force balanced by the dealer and then the wheels and tires replaced by the dealer and the second set is better than the first but it's still not right. I'm just tired of messing with it. My first tires were Dunlops and the 2nd set are Bridgestone's.

The first and second types of vibration can be greatly reduced or eliminated by improvements to the rear suspension design and by upgrading motor mounts and other engine compartment mounting hardware. It is my considered opinion that both of these are Toyota design issues.

The tire issue is just that, but it does seem that the 05/06 Tacoma's are overly sensitive to tire balance issues.

I have noticed this on my 2006 Tacoma access cab 4wd/TRD/Tow package as well. In fact, it's what brought me to this forum to see if anyone else had experienced this. It's not severe, but it is annoying. Sounds like there isn't a lot I can do about it. Has anyone actually had this problem solved? Based on everything I'm reading, the dealers haven't been able to fix it. It does sound like a design problem. This is my 4th Toyota. I'm really hoping that they recall for this or I may not buy another one.

He's talking Canadian dollars, which is still high though. I know I didn't pay 40.
I'll gladly pay $40,000.00 for my next Tacoma...So long as you throw in
A.Free Health Care for life.
B. Liberal Chicks who also have free health care.
C.some of the best snowmobiling on the face of the known earth.
D. Free health care for me and the chick after we plow through a barbed wire fence at 65

I would have such a hard time keeping a straight face if I got ticketed by a guy who said "I'm a Royal Mountie!"

This really makes me want to go to the dealer and test drive another Tacoma.........because it seems like only a few of us have this 2k rpm vibration. I have it, and as said earlier, it's not severe, but it is extremely annoying. If it happened at 4k rpm's, it would be no big deal, but the engine is at 2k rpm pretty much every time I accelerate. Either it's a design flaw, or we have some sort of problem with tranny/engine/driveline.

I'm taking my 06 Access Cab 4wd/TRD with limited slip in on Friday for this 2K shudder/vibration. I'm fully expecting the "It's normal" routine, but I have to start somewhere. Once it's documented at the dealer, I'm going to contact Toyota of North America, explain how this is my 6th Toyota and see what they will do for me. If nothing, I guess I'll just whine a bunch and maybe get a hug out of it or something.

Hi I have an 06, 2.7, 5 speed that has had a vibration and a drone that happens in 4th and 5th gear at approx 2000 and 2500 rpm, below and above that rpm its smooth and quite. This has been since new. The dealer has looked at it several times and even changed the drive shaft which did make it a little better
