Automatic Tranny constantly searching @ 40 to 55 mph

Hi everyone, Just got a Silver 08 DC TRD OR on December 31st. I am loving it !! Can't post a pic from work, but I will get one up when I get home. Not a week old so as you can imagine it's all bone stock. Well, that's not exactly true. I did put a Flowmaster Delta 50 muffler on the stock pipe. Sounds great !! Thanks for that idea and those that posted their D 50 videos on you tube.

I come from a long line of manual transmissions. My previous car was the v6 4.0L Explorer 2 door Sport that I bought brand new February of 1995. I actually still have it. It runs great. It's now officially my dog's car. lol. Love to go hiking with the dog, but am too anal to let the dog get on the new upholstery just yet. Before the Ford was several different Subaru's with manual transmissions.

I've noticed that in my Tacoma that around the 40 to 55 mph mark the automatic transmission seems to be perplexed about what gear it should be in. It will run up through the gears and change from fourth to fifth around 40mph @ 1200 rpm. That seems way low to me. I'm use to third gear at 50mph and 2500rpm's in the Ford. Moreover, as I am driving around town (shout out to the other folks around the Greenville SC area :) ) in that 40 to 55 mph band, the truck is constantly dropping back into fourth and then dumping into fifth as soon as possible. It seems to muddle around in fifth at 1000 rpm when it really just should have stayed in fourth the whole time. Or third gear really. I've always shifted at 3000 to 3500 rpm's in all my cars w/ sticks, just to give you an idea of where I'm coming from.

Is this just the way it is? I can move the transmission over to 4 speed and this gets rid of this problem completely and have no complaints. Other than the obvious longer stretches of non stop and go traffic or brief highway driving that comes about and having to move it back over to 5 speed.

I did a search on several terms corresponding to this scenario and came up dry.

Do you have a similar setup Tacoma? What's your take then? Is there anyway the dealer could change the software that controls the shifting to wait until it gets into a higher rpm level?

Thanks guys. Great forum !

The vehicle will attempt to learn how you drive, so that is probably why it's shiftng randomly. Mine was kinda sensitive in the shifting patterns for the first month I had it and now, a year later, it shifts fine. Once it figures out your driving patterns, it should settle down some.

Will it become self aware and search for Sarah Connor?

:)

I've noticed this too. I switch between 4 and 5 as well. I drive up a mountain everyday to get back home going about 45 mph the tranny seems not to know what gear it should go in to. Sometimes it will go low and then switch back up when it realizes its too low for the climb.
Yup, that's exactly what I'm talking about. I took my Tacoma up to Hendersonville NC on Saturday night so I could try out some medium grade long distance slopes and found that it didn't have too much trouble so long as I kept speed up over 50mph. I guess that's the answer. Leave it in fourth until you get over 55 then move it to overdrive.

I think it's the nature of the beast to get into 5th gear as quickly as possible, probably for gas mileage reasons, but I've never liked it or gotten used to it after 2.5 years. This truck needs the economy/power switch that has been common for toyotas over the years. It's an real fun issue with the drive by wire if you're up in fifth gear cruising along and want to pass, mash the pedal, wait a milisecond or two as the electronics decide what gear to downshift into, then it launches forward, downshifting two or three gears as long as you have your foot in it, as soon as you lift, it can't get back into fifth fast enough. Cruise control is fun too, it'll stay in fifth climbing a grade, long after it should have downshifted into fourth, or maybe even third, then it leaps forward, downshifting into second or third, gets up to cruise setting at full throttle, then shifts back into fifth ASAP.

It's weird this truck does not have an economy/power switch or tow/haul mode like the GM's. Did I mention the GM's have speed compensated stereo volume, thank God I've got the steering wheel controls, cause I'm on and off the volume constantly.

Having said all that, I like this truck, my first Toyota after 5 GM trucks.

On a different note, anyone here know "Open Taco" in Portland Maine, He made me a PM offer December 9 to sell me his 16" aluminum wheels and Rugged Trail tires he had posted here for sale, I replied in the affirmative on December 11 and haven't heard from him and I don't believe he's logged in here since?

I'm curious as to why the OP changed from manual to auto.

The reasons discussed in this thread are some of the major reasons why I do not currently nor eve in the future drive auto. I want to be able to shift when I want to, not when some computer thinks it's time or to save fuel.

Fifth, in the automatics is actually = to what was called overdrive, it’s to conserve on fuel. Every time you call for a little power it will down shift, espial in the mid ranges. If you are steady on the gas it shouldn’t downshift. Give it some gas and it WILL downshift.

the ECU has a short term memory

you havent had your truck long.......how many miles

what type of driving do you do 80% of the time...??

unless all the cops are on break
you will be surprised at actual rpms used
at any speed

the parametres on the ECU change each & every second
if you had a scan gauge you will see
"load" changing constantly....."ignition" advance changing constantly
& "TPS" throttle position sensor changing constantly
even in cruise control mode which is easily MORE
consistent than any human

americans are lazy, thus the pletora of auto's.

i still say manual > auto.

and depending on the tamoma, the mpg can be higher on the maunal

That's curious. When I first got my 07 5-speed V6, I don't recall it doing that. It pretty much shifts into 5th at mid30s or at 40 and stays there unless I press the pedal enough.

Like the others said, give it a few thousand miles. If it keeps doing it, go talk to the dealer, maybe it needs a reflashing or something.
