I have a 2000 Avalon XLS. I notice a very very fast flicker of all the lights interior/exterior when the car is running.

Is this definately the Internal Regulator in the Alternator?

The alternator is not cheap either! :disappoin

Thanks,

I've noticed this too. I have a 2000 Avalon XL I bought used about 6 months ago. Dealer checked TSB's at my last oil change (57K miles) nothing showed up. I've only noticed this since it's gotten colder out. Never noticed in Spring (when I bought it) or the summer, just this winter. Seems to stop once the car has warmed up. I read somewhere else that maybe the automatic headlight circuit was at fault. Anyway, you're not alone, there are at least 2 of us.

I just worked on a 00 avalon yesterday. I noticed the same flickering, but didnt find any problems. Needed a battery anyway but that didnt change anything, and the alternator tested good. Customer didnt want us to look into it. I guess they were used to it, or maybe never even noticed it since it was an older couples car. That would drive me nuts if it was my car.

tercel I did do that test awhile back and it still flickered. seeing I just bought the car I had a 60 day warranty (free alternator!!) so I had it done ,but I kinda knew it would'nt fix it. I wish someone would know what was up!! cause yes Shawn it does drive me crazy!!

My 2000 does the same thing. Interior lights & headlights flicker, more noticeably when it's cold out. Had dealer check service bulletins and recalls. Nothing showed up. I had heard it was something in the automatic headlight circuit also. No solution so far as I have heard. I searched high and low on the web and no one has an answer for it. I've had my 2000 for 2 years now and it hasn't gotten any better or worse. If you really want to see it flicker, turn on your overhead map light as soon as you start your car in cold weather. It'll flicker like Xmas lights. If you were epeleptic (sp?) it would probably induce a seizure if you looked at it long enough. I never got out to see if headlights look funky coming at you on the road. It does seem to pretty much go away after everything warms up and I haven't noticed it in the summer.

Well, I Was Reading All Your Posts And To Inform Everyone, I Have A 2003 Xls And I Have Noticed As Well That Sometimes While Your Driving That The Interior Lights Are Flickering. I Only Have 1500 Miles On The Car But I Am Planning To Have The Dealer Check It Out With My Next Inspection. Does Anyone Know Why And What Could It Be?

I have a 2000 avalon xls also. The same thing has been happening to my lights. I contacted my local Toyota dealer and he said it was the alternator. It wasn't! He then got in touch with the head toyota people in California. They said for him to disconnect the air/fuel sensors and check the lights. no more flickering.A computer glitch. they say the air/ fuel sensors are coming on at the same time creating a large draw on the electrical system. As soon as they can get some software together they will reprogram the computer so the two fuel/air sensors come on at different times instead of together so there is not the large draw on the system. Check with your Toyota dealer on this. Also replaced my battery. All that draw was weakening the battery. Even though the flicker is still there it's not as noticeable with the new battery.

Has there been any update with this, or any one had any luck going this route? My flickering lights on my 01 are driving me crazy. lol. I have read where some replaced the alternator and it resolved the issue, others it didn't help. I didn't want to replace it if it wasn't the issue. As many cars effected, you would think there would be a recall or something. Most every 00-04 Avalon I see has fluctuating lights. Thanks.

I bought a left over 04 Avalon in 3/05 XLS with lights that flicker inside and out all the time-Anyone know of a fix ?
I recently had the dealer chech with Toyota headquarters and the word is the air /fuel sensors are coming on at the same time. It is worse when the weather is cold especially here in New England. The large electrical draw causing the flicker. He said it is normal, but I will pursue further action- This should not happen especially on a new car. They replaced the alternater already with no change in the flickering. I hope to talk with a Toyota service rep on this if the dealer won't go further with a fix to this problem !

have exact same problem with 2000 solara

guys let know on forum what the final results are and how to finally fix it. does replacing the A/F sensor help? or is it neccessary to reload car computer with updated software?

The air fuel sensor issue sounds bogus, rarely does Torrance CA tell a technician how to fix a car, more or less what course of action should be used.

I had a 2000 sienna the other day which had flickering cluster lights, needed an IAC valve, idle was too low causing all sorts of problems, idling at 490-500rpm.

This is the same as I have

Amazing!

Two different vioces on the forum are true to me, so it seems that error code P0505 my ECM shows has to cause flickering the lights too :)
I have the same problem with revs, when idling they are looow like 500, but sometimes holding up at 800. I thought this is Idle Speed Control Motor failing or wiring or tha IAC valve, but didn't have a clue that it CAN CAUSE flickering of lights :))

Thanks man, you are my saviour! At least I know that definetely this not being caused by an alternator  and will see my mech tommorrow for fixing IAC issue to get rid off P0505 :)

Flickering lights

Just started experiencing this issue. Installed a brand new battery, still flickers. The old battery was bone dry when I changed it out, wondering if the regulator caused it to fry. Anyone going through multiple batteries while trying to fix this? I am going to replace the ground wire to the battery next.

check if screws on all wires are tight

Hi,

I found a cause for myself and recently posted it on Solara forum and forgot to do the same here.
Recently I found what caused the issue for me. well it was one loose tiny screw on thin wire connected to positive wire on the battery. since I tightened it (2 months already) I never experienced the issue again :whatwhat:

If it doesn't help try replacing the ground wire or check ground wire connection.

Good luck!

Hey Guys,

I have recently inherited my first Toyota. It's a 00 Avalon XLS and you guys have been a great resource for a few of the minor situations I have had with the vehicle. My wife drives the car and absolutely loves it for the past couple of months she has complained about the dash lights flickering and it wasn't until yesterday that I got the car to duplicate it. The last post I can find for this is from Sept 06 and doesn't really state whether any real cause has been found for it. I spoke with 4 different local dealers and they all swear they've never heard of an Avalon doing this, but if I would bring it in they could look at it. I find that very hard to believe given the number of entries on this forum with the exact same problem. We have a new battery and my question is: Is there anyone with recent info regarding this situation on the Avalons?

Flickering lights

Hello -
I hope this is where I can reply -

This same occurrence happened to me in 2013. After researching this site, I found a solution. It was a corrosion problem from the alternator to the battery. Replacing the wire fixed the problem.
