Avalon Touring Questions

Hello everyone,
I am a long time lurker in this fabulous Toyota forum~ Never own a Toyota before, but very likely is looking at Avalon Touring. Not able to test drive the car yet due to COVID and scheduling so I have few questions for the owners of specific Touring trim:

1. After viewing YouTube channels & several car magazine reviews, there are opposite of comments on the ride quality. Some say it's extremely comfortable, some say its hard riding, you will feel the grids and imperfection on the road. What's the Touring owners feel about its ride quality?
2. Again, the reviews on Avalon regarding to the wind noise are also varies- some say its extremely quite and serene, some say its very obvious and not "Toyota like".....Whatever that means... I had driven some Toyota rental cars and rode in some Toyotas before and I am aware the wind noise is more obvious because the chassis/road noise is pretty low compare to others. So what's the Touring owners say about the wind noise?
3. Adjustable suspension & driving modes- Can you feel any real differences between the suspension modes/ driving modes or they are more of "fill the blank button switch"? What you think Touring owners?
4. Lastly, is Avalon really reliable? I am not talking about just engine and transmission reliability, but overall- electronics, suspension, fit & finish quality....etc.

They are long questions and concerns, so any comments and inputs are very appreciated and hopefully to become a Toyota family member soon!

well I have the limited, this being my third avalon..I believe the limited has the most tame suspension as far as ride. I want a marshmallow cocoon for a ride and its very nice. As far as reliablity...well it dont get much better. A drive to the moon with one of these cars will get you there and back.

As per the different driving modes, you can actually make out difference in the suspension, throttle, handling and acceleration, on Eco mode the suspension is the softest but the car feels sluggish as well, the normal mode is the best for everyday driving. Sport and sport + also have a noticable difference. As of now I have 10000 plus miles on the car and never had any issue in terms of anything. The car is extremely great and feels very premium. The reason I say that is, before this I had the V6 XSE top of the line trim of the 2018 Camry and when I compare the 2 cars, the Avalon is completely different and refined. Road noise is there but there is a considerable difference between the Avalon and Camry (Avalon being much quieter). Since these are 19" rims the tires are very low profile so I guess that's why the noise. The limited trim comes with 18" which makes the profile of the tire higher so I have read many people on the forum saying it's awesome and very quiet.
Hope this helps. Let me know if u have any further questions.

I had my 2019 Avalon Touring for over a year now. I upgraded to the Avalon from having a 2018 Camry xse. I don't hear any noises while driving. I will say that the Touring is the only version that has variable suspension that constantly changes while you are driving. The changes are based on the road.

Wouldn't call it hard or extremely comfortable. The ride is somewhere in between and is subjective. Coming from a sport car prior to my AT, the ride is very comfortable.

I don't hear any wind noise over the sound system playing. And even with the audio off, it's a pretty quiet car (besides the intake sound enhancement when accelerating) in my opinion.

The AVS is most noticeable between sport and sport+
with sport+ you are on full stiffness all the time and it makes the ride very harsh and not pleasing at all. Throttle response seems to be equal between the two modes. I stay in sport mode most of the time, and occasionally normal mode. The throttle response is just not that great when you're not in sport mode.
4. Lastly, is Avalon really reliable? I am not talking about just engine and transmission reliability, but overall- electronics, suspension, fit & finish quality....etc.

The power train is extremely reliable. With port and direct injection, Toyota has solved the problem with carbon build up on the valves while getting the most out of the engine. The only concerns I have is all the electronic features. From headlights to safety sensors, these components will eventually fail and will fail sooner than anything engine related. I would get an extended warranty for peace of mind.

No complaints with the ride quality, soft and compliant. The reliability and quality have had no issues in just under 2 years of ownership.

DI shouldn't really be rougher on plugs.

I personally have owned many high HP cars (last one was 957whp personally built BMW M3) and am a fan of standard copper plugs properly gapped and replaced every 20k miles. Nothing wrong with platinum or irdium. Just my personal preference

I'm 20k miles into mine.
Overall, I'm loving the car. The ride is tight and responsive without being jarring. Yes, you will notice a difference when using the Sport/Sport+ mode, the road noise from bumps increases.

What I do not like is the amount of rattles. The JBL system doesn't help that situation any either. I have had a rear door speaker that was cracked and replaced, but that's only been about 2k miles ago, so we'll see how it holds up. Road vibration will set off some of those interior rattles, and once your ear is tuned to them, it's a little annoying.

We have the 2019 Touring, and while it looks nice to have the 19" wheels, my wife thinks the ride is a bit rough and harsh compared to her older 2011 Avalon Limited. If you're on a smooth road, they're great, but a rough road will beat you to death.

So, we're looking at replacing the wheels with the 18s from the Limited or something similar.
Note: She prefers ride over handling, so in retrospect, we probably should have bought the Limited.

This is one of two reasons why we bought the Limited over the Touring, that and we liked the wood trim versus the metallic trim.

IMHO, the very low profile tires track better, but you absolutely pay for that in ride comfort. In addition, if roads in your area have lots of potholes, the likelyhood of wheel damage goes up exponentialy.... just less cushion between far edge of pothole and the aluminum wheel.
