Bike Attachment Mod

This is hardly a technical mod, but it's still something a lot of bikers might want to consider.

I hated the fact that the Toyota bike mounts cost as much as they do and weren't lockable...so I changed that.

I had 2 Yakima locking skewers from an old roof rack but they were 9mm. I dremeled off the tabs on either side of the attachment and bored the hole out to 23/64". This is equivalent to 9.13mm - the perfect size for the skewers. I couldn't go from 1/4" to 23/64" so I stepped from 1/4" to 5/16" to 11/32" and finished off with 23/64". You can buy these skewers by themselves from stores like REI or any Yakima dealer.

Although they're now lockable, I suppose someone could bash the cleat with a hammer and be off with the whole thing, but the point is to deter and I think this does a pretty good job.

cool but someone could just loosen the mount itself and twist the bike and remove the whole rack/bike combination. i'm sure you thought of that. i agree that your method would deter most people though. wouldn't trust a real expensive bike in that setup though.

wait...what materials did you use again? I can see the yakima skewer there but I don't recognize that metal piece that sits perfectly on that whatever that side thing is called.

My bike cost me nearly 3k and I'm still exploring other options to what I have now. My setup for now is using the drain holes on the front of the bed. Basically I have a metal plate that I've welded a locking yakima holder and bolted it on the bed. The only problem is I've lost my drain hole for when it rains so I had to drill another hole. It works but somehow I feel it's not so secure.

That piece of metal is Toyota's bike attachment that bolts to their factory cleats. It came with a 1/4" skewer.

Nice...I agree the Toyota bike mount is about 2500% overpriced for a piece of scrap metal with a skewer. Colo...it would be hard to loosen and twist with a bike attached. Rather they would just grab the bike, bend and yank, and split...

I thought about locking mine, but usually when I throw the bike in for a ride, I am with it the whole time. The times I do go into a food place to garbage-up I park in eyesight, even if it is the fire lane in a shopping center, right in front of the store. I did that at a Panera Bread Co. recently and got some disapproving looks from some of the ugly losers and old freakin' hags, but WTF? If they only knew the amount of money perched on my taco bed they would wet their Depends...

I'm not a dick about it but on the few occasions I need to, I violate the fire code, darnit!!!

looks good. i have a similar setup. you know, you can save those bed rail cleats. cleats cost like 18 a piece. you can find bike mounts lfor less (well at least performance' xport brand/rei's, etc). skewers are universal so most locking skewers work fine in non-locking sets. unless of course if you have better options...

Yes, man...great thread you posted earlier...

http://toyotanation.com/forum/t120255.html

I probably could swap them out but the cleats with the bike mount still function as cleats, since the bike mount has cutouts...

If I need four cleats in addition to mounting two bikes I will do that...right now...since I already bought the Toyota mounts, like a dummy...

I still don't see much worth to fashioning a locking mount, unless you have some parts on-hand to do it...like Adrenalite did...

It could come in handy going into dinner after a ride...to not keep an eye on the bike...if it is a safe area...but you want some security...for sure...
