Bluetooth issues/dropping calls & entune

Wondering if anyone else has a similar issue: on my 2017 Toyota Highlander, Bluetooth connects without issues (for both media and phone) however during a phone call (incoming/outgoing) the car system will drop the call after about 2 mins of talk time. The phone then disconnects from the car & will only re-pair once the system restarts.

i have an iPhone XR with iOS 14. The tech at the dealership keeps saying “they are running tests” and even went as far to say there is an update for the entune system, however the car “won’t take it”. I’m being told there have been no other reported instances to Toyota and I’m trying to do a little fact finding.
Thanks.

Apple Releases iOS 15.1.1 With Call Improvements for iPhone 12 and 13 Models
Wednesday November 17, 2021 10:20 am PST by Juli Clover
Apple today released iOS 15.1.1, a minor update that comes almost a month after the launch of iOS 15.1.
iOS 15

The iOS 15.1.1 update can be downloaded for free and the software is available on all eligible devices over-the-air in the Settings app. To access the new software, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
According to Apple's release notes, iOS 15.1.1 improves call drop performance on iPhone 12 and 13 models, so users who have been experiencing dropped calls should see improvements after installing the update. It appears to only be available for devices in the ‌iPhone 12‌ and iPhone 13 families, including Pro models, so users with other devices won't see the update.

I have a 2017 Prius V and never had issues with my iPhones that i can remember, until the latest iPhone update. That’s when calls started getting transferred from the car system back to the phone. I’d think they were disconnected, but would realize that the call was still live. It’s been really crazy. Sometimes it transfers the call to the phone and then just as suddenly goes back to the car System. It also disconnects the phone randomly even when I’m just listening to music, or it won’t play music…it will show that the phone isn’t connected to the car at all for music, just for calls, and when I try to connect for music it won’t let me. I usually have to pull to the side and turn the car off to get it to connect!
I’ve had this car for several years with no problems, so I’m thinking the problem is coming from Apple’s side.

So you aren't going to file a complaint with NTSHA, like others are recommending? ;)

I'm thinking you are correct.

My wife is having the same issue with her new iPhone 13 running iOS 15.1 on our 2018 Highlander. I don't seem to have this issue on my 2000 Lexus RX300... Seriously, I believe that this is an iOS issue. These problems didn't occur until we got new phones with the new iOS.

I updated my 13 pro the other day to iOS 15.3. I then deleted my car from the phone and my phone from the car. Since I paired them back up everything has been working flawlessly but I haven’t logged enough long calls to feel confident.
Thanks for the tip. My wife has been having issues with bluetooth calls dropping after a little over 2 minutes when using her new iPhone 13 with iOS 15.1. We have a 2018 Highlander. The bluetooth worked fine with her old iPhone 8 running iOS 12. I'll try to update to iOS 15.3 and recreating the bluetooth pairing on both ends.

I have a 2017 4runner, an iPhone 12pro and Verizon and I started having this issue in Oct 2021 after I did the update that was prompted on my navigation screen. I’ve done all the trouble shooting recommended here and from the dealership to no avail. Now Toyota is saying I need a new head unit. Has anyone discovered if it’s Apple or Toyota??? Help!

As an update to my report above. My iPhone 13 Pro with iOS 15.3 has been nearly flawless since the update and the re-pair. I have made multiple calls between 4 and 8 minutes long with no (zero) disconnect issues. I did however receive one call that for whatever reason came through the phone and not the car. The car didn't even know a call was coming in.

For me, apple still has some bugs to work out but the phone pairing is at least usable at this point. Now that I have written this out I'm sure I'll have all sorts of issues in the next few days.

Has anyone else seen an improvement with iOS 15.3?

What version of iOS are you on. I have not yet seen someone report that they are still having these issues on iOS 15.3. Mine has been working just fine. I did tell both my car and phone to delete the Bluetooth pairing information and reconnected them from scratch after I updated.

Im guessing that people come here to complain and as soon as their problem is solved they disappear without reporting back the relevant information that would help others.

I have this exact same issue on my 2016 Avalon. I have a Google Pixel 6. It's driving me insane. I'm trying to determine if it's an issue with my phone or the car, however, seeing this post makes me believe that this is a car issue. But I'm pretty sure my wife's iPhone 13 Pro doesn't have this issue though. However, I do think it used to happen to her iPhone X before she got a new phone. So I'm so confused. What ever happened with your situation?

Patience Grasshopper... everything in life does not work all the time... once the software is updated all will be fine and we will move on to another issue...:)
Ironically, I have a pixel 6 and I have this exact issue and it's driving me insane. My wife's iPhone 13 Pro with the newest update does not have the issue.

I'm having the exact same problem with my 2015 Highlander. I got a new pixel 6, so did my husband and it drops calls for both of our phones. My old Motorola phone was fine with the car. They be complete software update on the system and didn't make any difference. I'm really discouraged to hear the Toyota will not own up to these issues.

Wait! What? This is NOT Toyota's fault. This IS an issue with YOUR cell phone. It worked fine with your other phone, and YOU upgraded your phone. Toyota didn't do anything, you did.

Honestly, I'm not even sure if it's a Toyota issue or a pixel issue. There is a brand new February update that was released yesterday from Google that allegedly fixes Bluetooth issues that "cause devices to get disconnected from some Bluetooth devices" . I'm hoping and praying that this will fix the issue as well.

Wrong. It could also be an issue with Pixels but there's definitely an element of issue with the car. It didn't work with my wife's iPhone until very recently when she upgraded to the iPhone 13 Pro and both our phones work fine with other cars. It's just with the Toyota Entune system that it doesn't work with. So that sounds like a Toyota problem to me as well. Honestly both are probably the issue. Some sort of compatibility issue. Hopefully Google can identify it and install some sort of codec that would be compatible with these old Entune systems...
