"Toyota Recalls 1993 Camry Due To Fact That Owners Really Should Have Bought Something New By Now"

"TOKYO—Saying it was simply time for drivers to move on, Toyota Motor Corp. issued a recall of its entire 1993 Camry model line Wednesday due to the fact that its owners really should have bought something new by now. “We understand that the 1993 Camry was tremendously dependable, but, honestly, there’s just no excuse for driving a 22-year-old car at this point,” said Toyota spokesman Haruki Kinoshita, adding that, with all the advances in automotive technology that have taken place, no one really had any business driving a vehicle for more than two decades. “We’re not saying you have to buy a new 2015 Camry or splurge on a flashy new hybrid, or even that your new car has to be a Toyota at all. But the bottom line is that you need to start fresh, however you choose to do so.” While Toyota is reportedly confining its recall to the 1993 Camry, it also issued a warning to owners of 1994 to 1998 models alerting them to the fact that they were really starting to push it."

I would much rather be driving my 94 XLE 2.2L over my current 99 XLE 2.2L. Much better seat comfort & ride quality!!!

Absolutely amazing. I think we have a cultural or international misunderstanding on the part of Mr. Kinoshita. I assume he is from Japan, where due to the laws and norms there, a car is usually recycled by 60K miles. They need the metal, since that is one of their resources that is lacking on that island nation. There are other reasons for this as well, such as the nation of Japan is crowded, with X number of people per square mile and they don't typically drive the kind of miles that we do, with our long commutes, and our huge country which provides an expanse of miles, coast to coast which we can drive. So, North-Americans typically put MANY more miles on their cars than the Japanese do. I think Mr. Kinoshita is not considering this point, even though he is probably aware of it. It's astounding that this may be the first and only "recall" in history that is not because of a flaw in the particular automobile in question (in this case a Gen 3/4 Camry), but because of it's famous dependability. It makes me wonder if they purposefully degraded the reliability of the subsequent generations of the Camry after 2001 (or other models as well). I'm sure there are other reasons for this, so perhaps someone else can chime in on this.

Right - These dang cars are amazing. It's not about upgrading to a new car with newer technology, it's about how many miles you can get out of your Toyota, Right?!?!

John, I hope you realize that this article is from The Onion, a fake news site. But just think how cool that would be, a factory recall of your 20-something car! Sign me up! My girlfriend loves her 98 Camry but the upholstery is falling off the front doors, it needs new struts and leaks like the Exxon Valdez. Recall it and fix it or replace is with a newer car. I'll even kick in some coin!
For the record, I like Toyota and love my '02 Lexus IS300. I don't expect to be going back to 'American-made' cars.

226,000 miles, yes, long life still in that engine! Just make sure she keeps up on the maintenance, i.e. fluid changes.
