I am trying to help a buddy. He has a 1991 MR2 that had blown engine. The blown engine was replaced by a 2200cc 16 valve engine about 15 years ago. My buddy thinks the replacement 2200cc 16 valve engine might be from a Camry - though he is not sure.
Recently, the replacement 2200cc 16 valve engine has started to have few issues - it was not starting. He took off the distributor cap and rotor and would like to replace. But, he is not sure what year distributor cap and rotor to order.
.
I took some pics of the distributor cap and rotor. Anybody know what year is this 2200cc 16 valve engine ?

Thanks for any help :)

Well, based on your picture, I’d say the engine came from another MR2, because the cam cover has the label markings facing the intake manifold instead of the Camry’s cam cover label/markings facing the exhaust manifold. The cam cover is not reversible, unless they replaced the entire head, perhaps or simply obtained new labels and applied them in the reverse orientation, which may not seem too likely.

Yes. Excellent attention to detail.

I cannot believe no one has suggested simply getting the VIN off the engine.
Yes. Great way to sort that stuff out when it comes to otherwise unknown parts.

Personally, I hate cap and rotor. Even for an older car. If it were my choice, I would look into converting it into a distributorless ignition if available.

1991 to 1995 are the only years that the MR2 came with the 2.2L 5SFE engine. This was the 2nd generation of MR2’s, the 1990 and prior used the 1.6L 4A engines and early 80’s models used the 1.5L 3A engines. The MR2 went through a redesign in 1989 although North America did not receive them until early 1990 as 1991 models. The SW21’s got the 2.2L 5SFE’s

Thanks for replies.

So, it looks like engine is likely 90, 91 or early 92 and also likely from an MR2? When I checked on the standardbrand.com and rockauto , JH188 distributor cap and JR126 distributor rotor were used on 2200cc for 90,91 and early 92.
.
Then starting in mid? 92 Toyota started putting the ignition coil in the distributor cap (prior 90,91, early 92 engines used external ignition coil). The mid 92 and later "coil in distributor cap" part numbers look like JH195 distributor cap and JR101 distributor rotor - see pics below from rockauto

As best as we can tell. (w/ Strega doing the hard work / research.)

Part #'s, design, and fitment look to be an exact match: based on the pics posted.

Always recommend doing your own 'due diligence', if -any doubt-: a call -> and trip to the local auto parts store that has these (or comparable) parts in stock to compare in-person to verify proper fitment... is always recommended.
