Can I swap a 7th gen corolla engine into a 94-99 celica?

Was wondering cause I want the look of a celica but the commuting power of a corolla.

You definitely can because the most basic version comes with the corolla motor.

But to answer your question as to why the difference, well, you have to remember the Celica came in different trims. Different trims = different motors.

They range from 1.8 liter motors to 2.2 liter motors

Curb weight of the vehicle also has a major part in mpgs as well.
And of course lets not forget maintenance of the car itself..

They weigh about the same with the 7A-FE, the difference is in the transmission gear ratio's and aerodynamics, but mostly the transmission gear ratio's. The Celica trans has shorter gearing for better acceleration but slightly less MPG I believe. You can confirm by looking up Toyota transmissions on Wikipedia.
