Can I swap my 1997 engine/transmission for a 1995?

Hi,

I'm looking for information about doing an engine and transmission swap in my 1997 corolla.

I have found a standard, 1995 (1.6L, 4A-FE) for sale locally and I'm wondering if I could use its engine and transmission in my standard 1997 (1.8L, 7A-FE).

Has anyone ever done this? Would I come across many problems, or would it be a straight swap? Would I have to switch the computer? If so, would I then run into problems in terms of reading engine codes (odb1 vs obd2)?

Any information you could give me would be great!

Thanks!

Turns out it's a 1.6

Thanks for the info guys! After more looking, I've learned that my engine is actually a 1.6L. I was led the believe that it was a 1.8L based on the sticker on my distributer. However, upon closer inspection of the sticker on my hood (which had been all covered in grease - explains why I couldn't read it before) my engine is definitely a 1.6L as well. So I shouldn't have any problems dropping the 1995 1.6L engine into my 1997 since it's the same engine (both 4A-FE)...and the transmissions should be fine as well! Sound right?

I'm going to go look at the possible donor car tomorrow with my Dad (the mechanic here). He'll bring his code reader to see if by any chance the 95 is obdII. If it isn't, we'll just change all the things that we need to. And of course, by "we" I mean "he"!
