Can you help me with android head unit installation?

Hi there,

I have an 2015 Corolla LE with basic entune head unit (no nav). I want to replace it with an Atoto 6 pro unit. I contacted Atoto and they tell me I will need:

- AX-TOYCAM3-6v harness to keep backup camera. Notice the 12v step down to 6v for OEM camera
- Metra 70-1761 Radio Wiring Harness to connect speakers

They say that I will retain steering wheel control without anything else required: "your car uses analog resistive based signal to control dashboard stereo,so you don't need any other module (ASWC-1 interface is never required!)".

I have 2 questions:

1. Do you guys agree with AX-TOYCAM3-6v to retain camera? I am in Quebec and the best price/availability I found for this harness is 50$CAD from California through ebay. I will lose 50$ if incorrect part.
2. How am I going to connect the other wires? So far I only have a harness for the camera and speakers... but what about the rest? How will I identify all the other wires like steering wheel control, power, ground, lighting, etc?

If someone already did a similar install and could chime in, I would greatly appreciate... or perhaps there's a diagram for this Corolla gen available somewhere? I only found info related to speakers and remote start system so far online.

thanks for your help!!

PS how the heck do you perform an advanced search in specific subforums now with the site redesign??

you know what, a unit like yours is starting to make more sense. The BIG advantage with the Atoto is that I get it in 1 day from Amazon, with 30 day easy return available. But I need to spend around 120$ for installation gear... A unit like yours would cost me the same as Atoto + gear, plug an play, bigger screen, etc... but with the risk of paying duties and taxes and return pretty much unthinkable...

How do you like your unit compared to factory?
how is the sound compared to OEM?
everything worked right out of the box, right? (steering wheel controls, backup camera, etc)... except I think the voice command button on the steering wheel?
does the unit lighting dim with headlights on?

thanks for your help devinzz1!

i wouldn't go back to stock headunit. it does pretty much everything a android tablet can do. i have youtube premium so i can download playlists of all my songs including the music video.

all controlls and backup camera work.

screen can dim manually and automatically when it senses it getting dark.

no comment on sound because all my speakers are ran off of amp power not through the headunit itself.

only issue i had was there were some extra tabs not needed that i had to cut off. this may be because there are a couple different headunits used for these years

thanks for your help again devinzz1. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out... Man I hate being in Canada! started looking into the same unit as yours... might as well go for the most recent PX6 processor and 4gb or RAM right?

600$ (!) plus the very high potential to pay AT LEAST 140$ of duties and taxes once the unit is delivered to my door... now I can't justify paying that much for a chinese unit that is hit or miss in terms of expected reliability.

For about 675$ all in with harnesses and all, I got quite interested with Crutchfield Canada's Sony XAV-AX5000. A LOT less bells and whistles, but a good warantee, etc...but now, there are countless reports of constant issues with Android Auto, which is the main functionality I'm interested in. Back to the drawing board, again!! Maybe I should just stick to the crappy entune unit and stop wasting my time trying to find a good replacement at a decent price!

yeah torque is pretty neat, I already have the bluetooth OBDII gizmo. Thanks to my exchanges with you, I think I finally found a solution!! I completely forgot about a seller in Ontario with a good reputation that sells Android head units like yours! It's still is 650$ for a PX5 with android 8.1, but it has 4GB of ram, the IPS screen, decent amp chip... BIG added bonus, no tax, only 15$ shipping and a full 1 year warranty in Canada vs China! I sent them an email with a few questions, but I'm 99% sure at this point I will pull the trigger on that unit

Hey man, did you ever figure out the factory backup camera? Crutchfield says I don't need the 6v step down for my 2014 Corolla S, but you have basically the same car as me and ATOTO told you it's required. Any advice? I also don't want to spend 50$ on a adapter I don't need. I'm looking at the ATOTO F7 XE because it has wireless Android Auto.

Thanks!

wow, completely forgot about this post! The Atoto unit was junk, i returned it after testing it for just a couple of hours. Installed a Kenwood Excelon with Android auto/Car play included (wired and wireless) and never looked back... Bought this kit to install it which included the required hardware to retain the backup camera. Good luck!

glad

Glad if I could help a bit. To me, reliability and sound quality were the 2 top priorities. That's why i went with known brands. I recently helped my son install a Pioneer unit in his Civic and I like it even better than the Kenwood. The screen resolution, contrast and general look is much better. The 2 things that held me back the most with Daisita was 1) if I don't like it or if it works but not to my liking, i'm basically stuck with it and 2) the potential issues in very cold weather. What was VERY helpful was to use the Canadian Crutchfield website to figure out the head units and hardware that would fit my car (and to check reviews) and cross shop around to find better prices. I got the head unit from 1 location and the hardware from 3 others! in the end, i saved a lot of $$ that way.
