Carplay dropouts and "Device not supported" on my iPhone 8+

I upgraded my 2018 Camry using the instructions here in the forum. I occasionally encounter some issues and I want to see if I am alone. I notice two things:

1. When I plug in my iPhone 8+, it occasionally gives me a "Device not supported" message.
2. When using Carplay, sound will randomly dropout (complete silence) and the Carplay app disappears from the screen momentarily (5-10 seconds max) only to restart itself. This may happen once or twice and seems to settle in.

Has anyone else experienced this?
