Catalytic converter check engine code?

I had my catalytic converter replaced sometime back. Shortly after that the check engine light came on and the error code was traced to an issue with the catalytic converter.

My mechanic replaced the catalytic converter again free of charge a few months after that the light came back on.

I just had the code checked again and it indeed points back to the catalytic converter. Sorry I do not have the exact error code but I seem to remember it referred to an inefficiency in one of the banks.

This is an after market catalytic converter. What are the chances that everything is fine and that the sensor is giving an incorrect reading?

If the code is cleared then the light just comes back on in a few weeks.

Can this one code be permanently disabled or perhaps the computer modified so a satisfactory reading is obtained?

If it is just a minor issue with the catalytic converter, I do not really care but would I would want is to be warned is any other issues pop up that could cause engine problems. If I am ignoring the light because I think it is simply the catalytic converter then I might be ignoring a more ctrical issue.

The vehicle is a 2000 Toyota Solara. 4cly 2.2L

Was it P0420?... Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

They'll sometimes they'll throw that code if the downstream O2 sensor is bad. The ECU compares the output of upstream and downstream sensors and if the exhaust is not cleaner after passing thru the cat, it sets that code. So a flaky downstream sensor can definitely be the cause. And it's somewhat common.

No, not easily anyway. It would be simpler to fix what's wrong.

Yes I believe that was the code? When you say downstream O2 sensor. That is a sensor outside of the catalytic convertor?

Not sure what you mean by "outside"? Yes, it's not inside the cat, if that's what you're asking. It's screwed into the exhaust pipe, just downstream from the cat. Crawl under and have a look, it's hard to miss.
