Climate Control Replacement

Hi all!

I've been using the search feature but I can't find exactly what I'm looking for so I'm posing here. This is n00b level, so I apoloigize in advance for my lack of automotive repair skill -- I'm trying!

I have a 2009 1.8 base/CE Toyota Corolla. My air selection knob (far most one on the left) has been acting up by feeling "tight" when I turn it for the last week. Today, i heard something click inside and it just rotates freely without actually changing anything. In frustration and ignorence, I hit it hoping it would fix it, but now the dial is just stuck in there. It's broke and I need to replace it. I''d like to try and fix this myself, if possible.

So after a couple of hours of watching YouTube videos, I got the trim off around the radio. I then removed the top set of vents by pulling it out. To make it easier to work on the climate control unit, I was going to remove the radio. All the videos I saw were people just pulling the radio out, but I see four bolts holding it down. I've also tried just tugging at the climate control unit itself but after hurting my fingers it just won't come out. :help:

Here are my questions:

1) First of all, can I do this myself with my little skill set?

2) Do I have to remove the radio first?

3) Any recommendation on specific tools to remove those bolts if they indeed need to come out? They look semi-hard to get at. something like this?http://www.target.com/p/stanley-29-...3111954&LID=PA&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=13111954&gclid=CITUs7vRi7wCFQPNOgodSlMAyg

4) Can I simply pull the climate control unit out or are there bolts like the radio? I've been tugging on climate control now hoping just to pull the 4 yellow clips out but it wont come out.

5) If I buy a new one, is it plug-and-play? Looking at the back of some of them on ebay, some of the wires look "cut". Not sure if that's just how it was removed and I can plug in my cables or what?

6) If I do bring this to the dealer, what am I looking at ($ wise) to have them do this instead?

Thanks so much! You have all helped me before with other stuff,so I'm hoping I can do this myself. :)

Have you tried releasing those tab/clips do not pry hard they are plastic, everything is held in a way if screw, bolt, tab. nothing is loose....

Some picture to tell you the tools needed for the job be nice.

If the radio is a alan kep, bolt, torx metric, the tool you shown may be not the correct one.

on specific tools... no

any screwdriver set will work fine... but that ratcheting one you linked is a good set to have handy in general around the house. i have several ratcheting screw drivers and they are always perfect for typical around the house stuff

I am assuming that the climate control housing is independent and you shouldn't need to remove the radio unless you need access to the cables that open the vents and fan control. just mark each cable to easily identify the fan and vent. standard Philips should be enough. its been a few years since I have seen the layout of the center stack.
