Confusing overheat problem. Water pump??

Okay here's the deal.

I was driving down the highway at 75. all of the sudden my temp gauge goes squirly. OVerheats to the point where overflow bin cap explodes off. then goes back to norm. occasionally temp gauge goes squirly sporadically moving between hot and cold. made it to my destination where i butchered my thermostat assuming that was the problem. I ran cool for about a day till i got a new thermostat. Now the problem hasn't been nearly as bad but i had it go a little squirly (not to such extremes) for a brief moment untill i let off the gas and it returned to temp. THen later it started to raise temp gradually till i let off the gas.

Any ideas of what could be wrong? Think my water pump is going maybe? What else could it be? Any ideas would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Luspher

bad cylinder head gasket (explains explodies), clogged radiator, loss of veins on water pump.

I had a head gasket leak that caused the reservoir to explode on acceleration on another car...... does the water smell "funny," like gasoline and/or exaust, does it have an oily film on top?

I also had a leaky water pump on yet another car and when I removed it the centrifugal viens were devoid of any recognizable shape and kinda looked like little boulders instead of proper sized fins.

Lol nice. I replaced the radiator cap. Seems to have fixed things, but we'll see over the next few days. Thanks much for the help guys.

luspher if it was you water pump you may wanna check and see if you are losing any coolant. if you are losing coolant and cant locate the leak then its possible the WP may be gone. water pumps have a weep hole that leaks coolant when its on its way out.

hope this helps you
