Has anybody had any experience with the diesel engine Hilux?
Is the diesel engine any different in torque, power, and/or drive than the gasoline 4 or 6 cyl?

Here is everything you ever wanted to know about Toyota diesel trucks for the Canada & USA market:

The way the price of gasoline (petrol for Australians) is going I suggest that everyone convert their Toyotas to diesel as they are more:

fuel efficient
higher torque
waterproof
simpler
reliable
safer
can idle all day long
less overheat episodes
can burn bio diesel or vegetable oil (without glycerin)

Well to help everyone dismiss the myth that Toyota diesel pickups & SUV's are rare in USA & Canada I have included below a list of very resourceful links that contain places to buy diesel engines/parts and complete rigs.

These are 14 Toyota DIESEL 4-Runner/pickup discussion sites:

the hilux's have a 2.8L naturally aspirated diesel. they are wicked slow.
my surf has a 2.4l turbo diesel, which you can swap the exhaust mani and turbo from and it wakens it up. still not as fast a a gasser though.

i got wheelspin off of my 22re automatic 2wd Deluxe Cab that weighs 4300lbs today at a slightly wet stoplight today. does that count 1 point for the gas power? lol, relatively the diesel SHOULD have torque, like Cummins turbodiesel tosses 600lb ft of torque on those rams. i was expecting the toy's to be at least 200-250. are they?

I was thinking of getting one of those right hand drive Hilux's you see around the past few years but I've always wondered what passing on 2 lane highways would be like from the right seat.

So one day I asked a guy at the gas station what it was like for him, (He has the 2.something diesel) and he just laughed and said "you don't have to worry, it doesn't have enough power to pass anything". He said something about a horn that goes off if you go over 105 KPH (roughly 65mph)???

Then a few days later I had the opportunity to try out a right hand drive hilux pickup with the 3 L diesel and it went 120 (that's 75 american KM) no problem on the highway. In fact I'd say it had about as much power as my 3L gas does probably even more torque.

And the view from the right seat made up for the lack of view around vehicles ahead on the left. I just kept turning on the wipers instead of the signal.

i can't get the wheels on my surf to spin on take off, i can do some sweet brake stands though.
i had the surf up to 160km/h out by sherwoodpark chasing a friend in an f150. as soon as i caught up, he took off like i was standing still.
passing is basicly a non issue because of the lack any motivation. if you do need to pass, i usually pull onto the shoulder of the road and look around, and remember how many cars pass, and what colour they are. not to mention have a lot of space for it to build up some steam.
that buzzer that guy had is easily removed, if you have no problem removing the cluster, i think that where it is, my surf already had it removed.
if that guy had a hilux pickup, it has a 2.8 liter diesel, same one you would have tried out. the 3L is the engine code for that engine, the engine code for my surf is 2L-TE, it makes it a little confusing when you think the number and the letter are the displacement
