Disable beep when driving with tailgate/rear hatch glass open?

I've seen a lot of posts about disabling the beeping noise when you initially open/close the hatch, but I don't know if the same speaker is beeping when you're driving with the tailgate/rear hatch open. It only beeps when you're moving. Sometimes I need to haul stuff with the tailgate open or if with stuff extending out the rear hatch glass, but the car beeps the whole way home.

I realize it's a safety thing but it would make the drive home that much more bearable if I could reduce the volume or eliminate it completely for these situations.

Thanks,
Paul

I believe I read a thread on here several months ago where you can fool the warning chime into thinking the rear glass is closed by tripping the glass latch mechanism with a screwdriver while the glass is open. This will keep the beeping turned off while driving with the glass open. Just remember to push the open button to release/reset the latch before shutting the glass when you are done hauling. I don't recall anyone finding a way to drive with the large rear hatch open without the chime beeping.

I saw something like that in Google searches, but was hoping there'd be a more elegant solution. Thanks, though.

This is great information. I just loaded my 2022 (140 miles and dealer tags) hatchback with 29 PVC and conduit, 10 footers, and listened to the alarm the whole way home. My.2012 focus hatchback would silence when I hit okay.

There is no way to tie the rear door down easily. The focus had convenient handles. I am going to drill small holes in these handles.

The Corolla front seat leaned far enough back to slide the pipes under the dash, but I drove most of six years without the passenger front seat in the focus. Convenient for sliding in the kayak, sleeping in rest areas, carrying home small trees etc. I wonder what alarm I will get if I try it with this. Just an airbag light on the focus.

I created this "plug" this for my 4th Gen (2020) Highlander Hybrid tailgate to prevent the beeping - I'm not sure how similar the tailgate latch is on the 3rd gen - but if someone want's to try it and report back I will send you one:

Buy it here...

or print yourself...

There is a latching mechanism on the bottom of the hatchback door.

stop the hatchback door manually as it comes near the items protruding from the car.

Then use your finger to manually flip over the latch locking tang to the right.

This tricks the latch into “thinking”the hatchback door is in the fully closed — and latched — position thus shutting off the chime.

I’ve read of concerns that exhaust may be sucked back into the interior of the car with the hatchback in an open position. Open your windows to ventilate the car interior.

I have a GX 460 where i periodically need to load things thru the back window and got annoyed as well with the alarm bing. So I created this Bypass Plug. Just clicks into the latch to stop the alarm and to remove you hit open window and it releases. Colored a bright obvious color so that you are reminded that the latch is closed because if you slam the window shut on a locked latch, there is a good chance you will break it. Put this up for sale on my Etsy site. My teenagers do the 3D printing and order fulfilment stuff for some extra cash. But for $11 including shipping I think reasonably priced for the amount of time to rig up something on your own. At least problem solved.
