I know this gets posted on this site a lot, and Ive read all the different variations on how to disable this yourself, but I still havent had any luck.

I asked the guy at the dealership I bought it from to do it and he said he couldnt for legal reasons and told me to google it. That brought me here.

So my question is: Has anyone with a 2009 corolla had any luck doing this themselves? I must have tried about 20 times and it just doesnt seem to work. :headbang:

For the record, no dealership will disable the warning buzzer without specific authorization from the corporate office. Not officially anyway. If you ask a tech in his time off as a favour then they might. But as an employee of Toyota's service department, they are under strict orders not to compromise any product or its safety features in any way as the company is liable for any harm or injury resulting from said modification.

With that said, the best way to disable the buzzer is to just unplug the speaker behind your dash, just reach underneath with a flashlight, find the lead and *snip*

I suppose that is an option but why isn't there a special way to disable it like every other toyota?

I just want to disable the beeping. I can deal with the flashing light.

It can be disabled easily with the dealership's computer. It's listed as an option in the owners manual.

I've never heard or seen any official paperwork from Toyota telling dealers they have a stance on whether it can or cannot be turned off at the owners discretion.

My bestfriend got killed from not wearing his seat belt in an accident. If this is the case why you're hearing the beeping noise (not wearing the seatbelt) I think honestly you should think about just wearing your seatbelt instead of going through all that trouble to disable the alarm.

i agree. why go thru all the trouble of disabling the beep which reminds you to fasten you seatbelt the moment you start your car. it only takes a second to do it. but if u get into an accident without your seatbelts god forbids but it also takes a second to get killed.

what is going on in your mind?

The guy at the dealership was bsing you.I had it shut off during my last oil change. It can only be done on the tech stream unless you want to start cutting wires.

I don't remember him specifying why the alarm was going off, if it's the passenger seat then I retract my whole statement. As for a seatbelt not mattering, my friend got ejected from his car during the accident because he had no seat belt on. So all those safety features? (air bags, ect) Are useless if you don't have a seatbelt on.

Well that chance comes with any small car. But what we were talking about was the importance of seatbelts, and you made it seem like wearing a seatbelt wasn't important at all. Obviously that's not what you meant though so I'm not trying to attack you.

yes... its better to wear a seat belt.. you never know... plus.. dont you see... buckle up, its the law?
imho i think you should anyways...

Jeff Lange says it's easy to disable with the dealership's computer. I want to know what page in his manual does it refer to disabling the seatbelt light? My manual does not, nor should it.

This is not a procedure that available from any North American the dealership.

If you want to drive without a seatbelt on, you're breaking the law in any country I'd ever want to visit.

I always drive with my seatbelt on, and I insist my passengers do the same, however the audible warning can be quite annoying if something heavy is on the passenger seat, or whatever the case may be. I find the light on the dash/center console to be more than adequate.

So, that being said, the seat belt light cannot be disabled. The audible warning on the other hand however, can be. In the owner's manual, it is on page 446 near the bottom of the page. It is listed in the "Customization" section, which lists the options that the dealer can change on the car.

(For what it's worth, I work at a dealership, and we would have no problem doing this for a customer if they asked us to.)

haha Toyota could easily replace the beeping sound with a looped soundbite of this quote. They seem to carry the same message.
Either way I'd prefer not having a virtual lawyer sounding off at me everytime I break the law in my own driveway.

Tested how to

For me worked following for Corolla 2009:
1. turn the key to the ON position, foot off the brake
2. cycle the odometer with the trip reset button until the ODO is displayed (not trip A or B )
3. turn the ignition to the LOCK (OFF) position
4. unbuckle the driver's seatbelt if it was buckled.
5. turn the key to the ON position. when the dash lights have come on, press and hold the trip reset button and count a slow 12 seconds.
6. while still holding the trip reset button, buckle the driver's side seatbelt.
7. the odometer display should read "b ON" or "b OFF". toggle the beep OFF with the trip reset.
8. the process should be completed when you unbuckle or turn the key off.

why do people think they have to force there agenda or opinions on everybody else. if i break the law i get a ticket or die. why is that anybody elses concern? do you have to pay for my funeral expenses? do i charge you more for your insurance becuase i wasn't wearing my seatbelt. if you don't have anything helpful to post why don't you keep your opinions to yourself. thats the whole reason this country is broke. we gotta try to stick our nose in everybodys business and force our ways on them. if don't wear my seatbelt but i donate lots of money to various charitys am i still considered a law breaking piece of @#*$? and for the record i do wear my seatbelt and make my passengers wear there's but i'm not gonna tell them they gotta wear theres in there car. what about the guy that got trapped in his car by his seatbelt after a accident and got burnt on 75 percent of his body. are you gonna tell him "oh well your just a very small percentage of people who have been affected adversly by seatbelts. suck it up and take one for the team.

regarding that annoying no seat belt ringing

I too came here looking for an answer, because no matter what all the concerned people say about it's there for our safety... yes we know that.. thank you, but it's my business. Ditto to Rieds. I had to respond to this post by Puding. These steps make no sense and he's either joking, or it's designed to work only in that country, because I can't see that working on a Corolla made for the US.:disappoin

It strikes me as funny that people think they really need the car to remind them to put on their seatbelt with an audible chime, if they chose not to do so.

Anyway, it seems the simplest solution is to find the source of the chime under the dash and disable it if that's what you want to do.

It just seems easier to me to just take care of it yourself, rather than dealing with that hassle usually involved in having a dealer do anything that is not something specifically prescribed and spelled out step by step in a TSB, or a straight forward maintenance service that they do everyday.

Your options are as follows:

  1. Find a dealership that will disable it for you. Its a simple procedure that takes all of 2 minutes. They plug in their computer, change the setting and its done. But most dealerships will not do this for you even though its a customizable option in the owners manual.
  2. Find the speaker and disconnect it. This will probably require disassembling the dash, and you will lose all audible warnings as well as the seat belt reminder.
  3. Get a seat belt buckle that fits the car (possibly another corolla buckle from a junkyard). Simply pop it in and the beeping will stop. You could keep two of these handy in the center storage console for your convenience.
