I have a 2019 rav4 limited with 60000km on it. Today, i had an incident.
I got the car last year.
The battery died on me today.
I got a new battery in it. Got the battery and service done at Toyota as well,
All is working fine now. However the display touch screen is not.
It seems to be in some type of constant reboot mode.
Screen went black then restarted like I had turned my car off and on again. The speedometer and screen on the dash didn't do anything weird though.
The screen on the dash is fine, just the touch screen.
It comes on and even if a song is playing, it plays then goes off as the screen goes black again.
I also held the volume button down a few times. for it to reset. which it does, but it seems to be stuck in this forever loop of constantly going black and shutting the music down every few seconds.
i am not really able to use the touch screen touch sensor either , it works bit then it does not
Also i turned off the blue tooth on my phone as well, so phone would not be connected. I also disconnected my iPod touch was that connected to it. still getting this problem still
I did my best to trouble shoot this problem?
What suggestions do you all have.
I couldn't seem to find anything on Google about it happening to anyone else. Has anyone heard anything about this before?

I doubt it, but it would not hurt to try. The worst that can happen is you will lose some radio presets and maybe some other things that are easily reset. Leave it disconnected for an hour to let the capacitors throughout the electrical system and head unit to discharge. It could be that your head unit is kaput. If DIY rebooting does not work I'm afraid you have got to go to the dealer and pay whatever exorbitant charge they come up with since you are out of warranty. I would raise Hell with the service manager that the screen problem occurred after they changed the battery and ask them to fix it free as a goodwill gesture.

I had the exact thing happen at the Toyota dealership - was towed in to replace battery and they called to say the display is no longer working and needs to be replaced. “We will cover the labor but it would be 1k” what the heck! The screen was fine when the battery wasn’t working and now it’s just turning on and off and think I should have to pay for it…

The dealerships simply do NOT KNOW about the Reverse Reboot fix. It is not in any Toyota repair literature. See if you can get your RAV back from the dealer and do the Reverse Reboot as others in this thread and on the RAV4World forum have done. If it works then it saves you money and aggravation. You have nothing to lose.

My husband and I got our 2019 RAV4 hybrid back from the body shop today. Same thing . . . Auto shop said it wasn’t related to the accident damage and I had to take it to Toyota. On the way home I was researching online and found this. We stopped in a parking lot and went through all the reverse steps and it worked! We bursted out laughing. Could not believe it! Thank you for posting this!

This worked for me on my 2020 Toyota Highlander. Just bought the car and battery started smoking/steaming so we replaced it and then the screen started going off and on like every other minute. No buttons worked and touch screen wouldn't work. It was awful. The dealership I bought if from 5 days prior said we did something wrong when replacing the battery and killed the screen. Thank God I found this. I did the reverse for 5 minutes with car on but ignition off. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thought I was going to be out $1,400 for a new screen.

Just commenting to say thanks so much for the mention of the reverse method, worked like a charm so far for 2019 RAV4 Limited!

Screen kept turning off and on after removing some corrosion from the negative battery terminal I had to take off to fully clean.

Exact actions taken:
1. Pressed brake pedal
2. Pressed ignition to turn on car
3. Shifted to neutral
4. Activated parking brake
5. Shifted to reverse
6. Released brake pedal
7. Set timer on phone for 5 min (and 15 seconds for good measure) and just sat there and didn’t touch or do anything else
8. After timer was up:
9. Pressed brake pedal
10. Shifted to neutral
11. Released parking brake
12. Shifted to park
13. Released brake pedal
14. Shut off car
15. Opened and closed driver door
16. Pressed brake pedal
17. Started car
18. Confirmed screen was working so far

Seemed like the screen was working ok around step 12, maybe something to do with the camera view mode switching causes a problem? Seemed like CarPlay could be relevant too?

Hopefully it stays fixed and I don’t need to revisit this. Just wanted to leave this note as thanks for a painless fix and encouragement to others that it works.
Thank you so much! this worked for my RAV4 2020, you saved me $185.00
This worked on my RAV4 2020, thank you so much for sharing this tip!!

Just want to put this out here.

This week, I rented a 2023 rav4 woodland edition. It’s been a week and returning it tomorrow.

Today, the screen shutdown randomly. I don’t know if this method actually fixed the issue, but I held down power button until it shutdown and restarted. I ended up doing it 2x. It didn’t shutdown yet. Tomorrow I’ll know if it worked.

a 2023 rav4 woodland edition.
The '23 Ravs have a bug or glitch in the new design touchscreen infotainment system. This is a different system without all the knobs and buttons on the earlier model years. This issue is widely reported in the RAV4World forum. I do NOT think the reverse reboot will work to fix these new touchscreens. On the earlier models the problem only happened when people disconnected their batteries to replace them. On the new '23 models the screen issue just happens randomly and without warning.

It being a 2023, there’s just the power button. My first experience ever seeing a glitchy touch screen. Not sure how buggy these things are, but annoying for sure.

Yesterday, I’d be on the phone, and it reboot around 6 or 7 + times. I was hoping that holding power button in would shut it down completely. Nope, they made it a reset button instead.

I doubt what I did fixed it. It’ll return one day for a future renter.

The Reverse Reboot does NOT destroy, delete or change any settings--not those you made in the vehicle settings menu or any the car came with in its software from the factory. You don't even lose any radio presets. All the reverse Reboot does is fix the on/off recycling issue on the touchscreen.

Do dealers know how to do the battery change without deleting the settings?
Most RAV4s and other Toyotas will not have any issues at all when a battery is replaced DIY or at a dealer. Some will have the touchscreen cycling on and off which the Reverse Reboot fixes. Most dealers probably use a "memory keeper" device to try to avoid problems when replacing batteries. However, the great majority of owners just replace the battery DIY without a memory saver. Other than the infrequent touchscreen cycling issue some top end models also will require simple reprogramming of some electrical options when replacing the battery ( auto hatch door height adjustment, seat adjustment memory etc.) and that is only on cars with those options and you just reset them yourself in the vehicle settings on the touchscreen.

After a battery change, my 2021 Highlander XLE screen was turning off and turning back on, caught in a boot loop sequence and completely unresponsive.

I googled and found this thread.

The 5 minute reverse reboot method fixed the screen flicker issue I was having and restored my touchscreen functionality. As one of the posts above stated, the whole idea seemed "just left of witchcraft" but it worked for me. I'm over the moon.

I created an account here just to say THANK YOU to the community for posting this method.
