This is a "DIY" Projector Headlights with H4 Bulbs

TOOLS:

- HID KIT with 9000K D2S Bulbs
- Projectors (i'm using BMW E46, Size 3")
- Nuts/Bolts
- File or Sandpapers
- Foils or Metal Sheet
- Screwdriver

DURATION: (2-4hr)

STEP 1)
Take out the headlights from the car.

STEP 2)
PRE-Heat the oven for 10 minutes for 220 Celcius (or MAX temp).

STEP 3)
Switch it off completely, put the headlights in (MAKE SURE ALL THE BULBS ARE OUT OF THE HEADLIGHTS) for 5-7 minutes. Keep a close watch every couple of minutes!!

STEP 4)
Take it out from the oven CAREFULLY (wear cooking gloves). Pry the edges, between where the headlight lens and the backing meet (as shown in the photo). If they're still hard to pry, try putting it back in the oven for couple of minutes more... (THEN REPEAT STEP 4)

STEP 5)
Take out the Light Shield, push it with a screwdriver from the back.

STEP 6)
Sand down (or use a file) the bulb hole (as shown in the photo). So that the Projector will go thru.

STEP 7)
Once the Projector fits into the hole, you now need to take off the Bulb Holder on the Stock Headlight. Pry the metal bit (as shown in the second photo).

STEP 8) **NOTE: BEFORE DRILLING, DOUBLE CHECK!!**
Put on the D2S Bulb holder. Before drilling make sure the projector is Straight. Place the Projector to the back as possible, then mark the drilling position with a marker. (there are 3 holes for the bolts, but the one on the bottom right corner you cant use them as the parking light is located in that area, AS SHOWN IN THE SECOND PHOTO. I only used 2 Bolts and its ok!)

**NOTE: If you car is a RHD you need to flip the metal piece inside the projector, SHOWN IN THE FIRST PHOTO WITH BLUE ARROW**

STEP 9)
Once you have done both Projectors on the headlights, Put them back on the car (without the headlight cover, so you can adjust the aim of the Projectors)

STEP 10)
What to do with the GAP around the Projecto..? No problemo.... What I did, Grab some cooking Foil and wrap it around. This is the cheapest way OR you can wrap those ALUMINIUM DUCT TAPE. Then cover it up with Chrome Shrouds (which i haven't got it yet).

STEP 11)
Adjust the height of the projectors, make sure both of them are on the same level. NOTE: see how there still some Glare! You need to put Shrouds. GO TO THIS WEBSITE FOR MORE INFORMATION: http://faqlight.carpassion.info/hl-aiming.htm

STEP 12)
Once everything is right (check the Projectors are tightly on), put on the headlights cover (use Silicon) and screws them on. ENJOY! :D

Before I installed the shrouds, the cut off lines are not perfect, left headlights abit too high.

**NOTE: BEFORE GOING OUT TO THE MAIN ROAD, PLEASE DO SOME TEST AROUND A QUIET STREET. MAKE SURE THE LIGHTS ARE CORRECTLY SET UP. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES, THIS IS ONLY A GUIDE!**

Regards,
Leasaunce :)

nice job! just one question though, when you close up the headlights again, you need to use silicone or something to seal it right? I assume you haven't done that, cause you still need to install the shrouds.

^^U just put them back 2gether and pop 'em back in the oven to soften up back the glue, then squeeze 'em 2gether.

not bad for first retro., not sure about the aluminium tape, it might melt and eventually will peeled b/c the hid bulbs will produce a lot of heat. better choice is aluminium flash from hardware store. btw , did you color moded the projectors. keep it up!
Thanks for the advise. I asked the guy at the hardware store and they dont have anything like that. I'll keep on searching..if not i might have to ask you to ship them to Sydney :naughty:

I see some glare above the cut-off. :)

Great write-up. I vote for sticky as well.

Just a couple questions:
Where and how did you mount the ballasts?

Are you going to clean up the wrinkly aluminum shroud a bit? What are the plans?

Thanks.

is there a way you can make em, so that the HID bulb tubing is more recessed?? when its sticking out like that it looks kinda.. un-stock :p

What ballast did you use? the ones from the BM 3 series?

There are still abit of glare (i know), But after 3 nights using them i have no problem with oncoming traffic (not 1 car flashes me :D, not like 3yrs ago where i got flashes heaps of time cause i didn't have projectors). My E55 Chrome Chrouds they're coming soon....:naughty:

You forgot about the HID part, but I guess you were going more for a detail of the projectors. Anyways, great D.I.Y. I vote for sticky.
Sorry, but i asked someone to installed the HID for me, i couldn't be bothered installing them, too much work. Thanks for the comment :)

Sure why not, just that i don't have enough time to do them now, probably later on. I'm going to make a cover for the whole headlight, so that the projector looks hidden away. :naughty:

Thanks for all your comment guys! ;)

man i love shit like this..

now if only there was a cheap alternative for these for my crappy old gen2 lol..

So leasaunce, are you going with complete OEM HID setup instead of plug n play kit? I'm actually working on a complete retro (all OEM equipment) for my Gen 5. I'm too cheap to buy expensive chrome shrouds to cover the screws though so I'm fabricating one from odd materials (chrome flange and chrome range cover).

On another note, keep up the good work man.

Why couldn't you use the Gen 4.5 lens? Are the lens just too small or do the lens make the shrouds stand out a little more than they should?

BTW, very good work man. Keep it up!!!! Looks good but I'm guessing it would look even better with clear lens (both output wise and aesthetically).  2 Thumbs Up.
