Okay so im looking to increase the performance on my 03 solara and ive seen these adds online for 70$ performance chips that supposedly increase hp by 60. Is this a scam? or are these legit? or is there more expensive performance chips that actually can do this? thanks!

While for some makes of vehicles there are 'performance' chips which replace the 'brain' in the ECU, I don't think it can be easily accomplished for a Toyota. There are (at least in some states/areas) shops which can reprogram the ECU. I don't know of any other 'chips' capable of improving engine performance.

I am pretty sure that none of those chips will work that well in our solaras. I think even if the expensive one did much, it really wouldn't be worth the money. Nobody on Solaraguy has said anything about these other than that they are a waste of money. Unfortunately, our ECU's can not be programmed or reflashed like other cars out there. I am running into this problem trying to tune my closed loop, which is the normal operating fuel trim programming of the ECU. I can tune my open loop, which is wide open throttle with a SAFC2, but I will need to by something better to tune the low throttle.

I should note that both a SAFC2 and any other piggyback controller is useless unless you have the right mods and power coming to your engine. I just don't want you to go out and drop $500 on something you don't need. Save up your money and get a TRD supercharger and some of the other mods and do it right. :D

Like he said, none of those chips work on ANYTHING, the only way is to TURBO or SUPERCHARGE, Ebay's stuffs mostly = the shytties shyt , 7 years ago i bought an Intake from China for 50$, little mod on it to fit Solara gen1 eventhough they said it's fit, installed it and went for a test drive, instantly power FAILURE and shyt air flow into engine n CEL came on.

Took it off ordered an INJEN INTAKE direct fitment 450$ no mod unlike Dragon Intake, installed it went for a test, omg fucking awesome good deep tone and feel the real power.

Ordered a CHIP for 300$ installed it went for a test and feel nothing, ordered a Supercharge 4 psi" used one for 2800$ i hired a pro to install, went for a drive omg YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR !

Ordered TRD muffler no one was selling, got Magnaflow installed went for a test got pulled over and got a TICKET by COp lol took it off n put Stock back. and then i sold the Supercharge awhile after. No need since daily driven etc.

The only way to get any gain electronically is to custom tune the actual ECM (or BCM, etc depending on application), which takes someone who really knows their way around and has the right equipment and software. Cheap eBay junk is worth exactly what you pay for it or less.

I have tuned BCM/TCM replacements in my truck and they made a huge difference in drivability, shifting, etc.
