Here in Knoxville,TN our lazy ass cops use red light cameras to write people tickets if you roll through an intersection and the light is yellow. I have an idea on how to beat the m-f ers. My idea is to buy a laptop privacy filter and place over all or a portion of my licence plate. I am hoping that it block the plate number thus voiding any ticket. If you are unfamiliar with what I am talking about these filters were designed to keep people sitting next to you on an aircraft, bus, train, etc... from being able to read your screen. In other words it limits the viewing angle of the object it is placed on. Let me know what you guys think or if someone else has tried this idea and it backfired on them. I am just sick and tired of the hard working people (me and my friends) that pay these asshole's salary being penalized for going a yellow which is safer than locking up the brakes and risk getting up the tailpipe.:bullshit2

In PHX you'd get ticketed for obscuring your plate.

they sell a special film or spray, i forgot, that's design specifically for that purpose. I forgot what it's called, but it's motto is "beat big brother" or something like that. The cool thing is, IIRC, you cant tell the film is there unless there is a flash. It kinda super-reflects the flash therefore blinding the camera.

I'll try to google it

how about this...... Don't pay. lol. here in florida, its a company that does that, and not the police, so if u run the light, unless they can prove its you driving, they can't reallly do anything if u don't pay. i know a few people that have gotten away with it.

A few years ago I received a ticket from a camera for running a red light, and believe me there was no way I could deny it was me driving, thats how clear it is.

I believe its a privately owned company that owns and operates the camera's that's used by LE. The more citations issued obviously the more revenue is collected by the city but the company that supplies the equipment also gets a percentage of those revenue collected.

If the company set the camera to go off prematurely it can greatly increase revenue and beings theres no proven way to beat these camera's the driver pays the fine without trying to fight the ticket. This issue was taken to court in San Diego a few years ago and the judge threw out all the tickets that were issued over a certain period of time. I cant say for certain what the city did to remedy the situation but the apparently did something due to the fact there's traffic cams all over the city.

My friend has one on his Viper. If you look at it from the left or right, it looks like its broken, from straight behind, perfect plate.

I highly doubt they ticket you for running yellow....the entire point of the yellow light is it's a warning telling cars that the light is about to turn red. The yellow light is there to allow cars that don't have time to stop to be able to make it through the intersection without causing an accident.

im not sure how high the camera is but up in NY i knew guys that would leave thier tailgates down and go through the EZ-pass for the toll booths without the pass. Those cameras were up high enough so that all it would get a picture of was the tailgate and they got away with it everytime.. not saying that i agree with it but just heard it works lol

Here in Missouri they ticket whoever owns the vehicle that ran the red light. The thinking is that if you were not driving the vehicle that you should know who was and they can reimburse you. The ticket goes to the registered owner. Be careful if you let someone else drive your ride...

First off let me say that I completely detest these red-light cameras. I think they are a poor excuse for good traffic enforcement patrols.

Second: California Vehicle Code section 21452 only states what a yellow light means to a driver. It does not give any penalty for running it. The Vehicle Code only lists running a RED light as a violation. Now I know that I'm talking about California and you are in TN, but these laws are supposed to be standard throughout the country.

The last thing is, at least in California, traffic fines do not go to the issuing agency. All fines get placed in the State's general fund. The only ticket that has any chance of generating revenue for an agency is an expired registration citation. And that only effects the Highway Patrol because they are funded partially by registration fees.

Once again, I agree that automated traffic enforcement systems are too much of "Big Brother". However, don't call us "lazy assholes" just because you are frustrated over a simple $100 ticket. Fight it in court or pay up. Drive safer next time. I try to show respect in every contact I make...it's nice to get a little in return.

Well, this sure did get alot of attention. Let me make some things clear. First IMO I am a safe driver. I do not have a checkered driving past, in my profession that is a major no no. Second, if you are driving the posted speed limit and the light turns yellow and the vehical registered to you is past the stop line smile you're on cadid camera. I really did not post this just to hear "well you should slam on the brakes and stop", though I should have expected it. Shame on me. And since the subject of safety was brought up would it not be better to continue than risk being rear ended by slamming the brakes just to stop because we are all afraid of getting a ticket. Which ever way you slice it these cameras are bullshit, and they are only going to get worse. My idea I believe will work because if you are actually pulled over by a high school grad on a power trip he isn't going to know what you have done because he is directly behind you, so unless Barney actually gets out and puts his sniffer to the ass end of my truck I think they wil be as usual, clueless.

First of all...don't blame the cops for the camera...it's your state you should be blaming. The cops don't run the cameras and they don't even make money off them. They are placed their by town/city legislation...not the police themselves and are run by independent contractors who report to the state. The state issues the tickets and like Maticuno already said the actually police department don't make any money off camera tickets...the money goes directly to the state.

If you want to blame someone blame yourself for not going to the town/city hall and voting against placing the speed camera at that intersection.

Second...like others have said...the camera only takes a picture if you are in the middle of the intersection when the light turns red. Taking a picture when the light turns yellow would be pointless and easily fightable in court. If you're so sure the light was yellow then go fight it and you will probably win. Like I said before the yellow light is only for warning people that the light is about to turn red...it is not illegal to be in the intersection when the light is yellow. So a ticket with the light yellow would be easily dismissable in court. If the camera really is taking pictures at a yellow light instead of a red light then it is not functioning properly and should be reported to the highway department or the proper caretakers.

Really...all I see in your complaining is an idiot who has no respect for law enforcement because you've been caught too many times by the police doing stuff you weren't supposed to be doing. If you're so damn sure that your tickets are BS then fight them...if you're right and they are BS then the judge will obviously dismiss the ticket. Otherwise...shut you mouth and suck it up. The police are out there every day protecting people like you or I and it really irks me when morons like you try to blame your own misjudgments on someone who only trys to protect and serve.

You think our country is bad? Go spend a few months in the UK or any other European country. They have camera's everywhere and at every intersection. In the UK there are literally 2 camera's focused on every Kilometer of highway in that country and a speed camera and red light camera at basically every other intersection. In London there is a camera focused on every square inch of back street, corner and parking garage in the city. We have a lot of freedom if you ask me...freedom I personally believe not all of us deserve and a lot of us take advantage of. Europe and the UK have lower accident rates and crime rates...you know why? Cause they know that they are being watched...and they know that if they do something they will most likely get caught on camera. I have no problems being on camera in public, because I know I'm not doing anything I shouldn't be doing that I don't want seen. People who complain about the growing camera problem in this country are the ones who don't want to get caught doing illegal things. If you're not doing anything wrong then why are you so worried about cameras...you're not the one who is gonna get busted. Also don't complain that the cameras may be used to get your credit card number or anything because they aren't high enough resolution to read anything smaller then letters an inch tall. People worry that the government is going to start tracking you...yea well...you must have done something wrong to get them to track you...so really it's just working to keep the streets safer.

i agree, next time you get pissed for getting a ticket from a camera bc you failed to control your speed through an intersection, why don't you notify the family that you killed one of their family members instead of "one of the assholes doing it!!!" I have done a numerous death notifications from traffic accidents when the deceased was truley a victim and trust me, it sucks big time.

think about it before you make stupid coments about the lazy cops that do much more that you think they do.

as i recall, your vehicle has to be out of the intersection by the time the light turns red. if you are in the intersection you deserve a ticket.

cops are underpaid and overworked here on maui. lotsa speeding, blown red lights, crashes. :disappoin

lotsa drunken driving. :ugh3:

My understanding is that every signal light is timed to allow you to have enough time to stop before the light turns RED. It takes into account the speed of traffic on that road, so NO one should ever have to slam on their brakes.

Unless they are speeding!

And if you get caught in the intersection when it turns red? Then you had more than enough time to stop, you just decided the Chance it!

So if you don't make it and you get a ticket? That's the chance you take.

To claim that any street light changes so rapidly that it would require you to stomp on your brake?

I can't see that as being realistic? :disappoin:disappoin

Boo to "Big Brother" I hate the Camera's!

But it's like playing "Russian roulette" you know there is a risk factor.

It's up to you how you want to drive?

If you choose to take the risk? Please take the responsibility!

I used the spray on my old truck. Didnt get any tickets but it did turn my plates yellowish after awhile. It was probably do to the sun. Ended up having to order a new set of plates. They also sell reflective covers as well.

Another alternative was when I bought my truck brand new I didnt put on the plate for a good THREE years. Ran alot of tolls during that period. I finally got a registration ticket from the street sweeper ($10 fix it ticket, thank god). All these techniques to trick the cameras all it does for you is create bad habbits and will catch up to you. I have my plates on now and the best suggest is DONT run any yellows/reds and SLOW down. You'll eventully get to your destintion. A few mins late is no big deal. Havent had any tickets so (knock on wood).

Ive heard on the radio that some states has been busted for shorting the yellow light timer for profit. Heres the article... This is where the system is screwed up!

This may be a myth because i dont work there but my parents are friends with a couple that works for the city in the clerks office at the court and we met them at the lake while jetskiing and for whatever reason we got on the topic of the cameras that are placed on the freeway here in PHX AZ. They told us not to pay the ticket unless it is physically served to you. It being sent to you in the mail is not considered being "served" unless it is actually an officer of the law. Again, this is in PHX, and i dont work there.... that is what they told us and they are the ones who collect the $$ at the window at the court.

Here in Knoxville and the surrounding areas the powers that be placed these cameras at large busy intersections. If I am traveling 40 mph and the light turns yellow just prior to the intersection and I the driver deem it unsafe to to brake hard I should have the right to pass through without reprimand and this is exactly what I and others have done. Do these cameras take into account the distance from the stop line to an area where my truck will be clear of the intersection? I highly doubt it! I have sat at too many of these intersections now and watched others get the "flash" as they pass through. It amazes me how you cops stick together and say its a safety issue. BS!!! Its a revenue issue period. If it were about safety then why is that the first thing out of your mouths is " this won't go against your record just pay the fine and you won't even have to show up to court. Just like when my wifes car was broken into the cops say it will be 45 minutes to an hour and a half and "they probably won't find any prints, so you could come to the station and pick up the report" and then when we go to get the police report (which cost money now btw) we pass by one of you fuckers running radar 3 blocks away. Lazy ass mother fuckers is all you are and will ever be!!! You write tickets because its easy and profitable. Stop drinking the kool-aid its not safety its your pension fund dumbass. Thanks to the guys for what little bit of back up I recieved.

FACT:
BULL SHEET: Revenue is the only reason these cameras exist.
Gotta call you on that one. Safety may be the original justification, but the lure of easy cash is too strong, especially when the cameras are operated by private companies. There are several counties in SoCal where the cameras had to be removed/deactivated when the vendor was found fudging the yellow light times, exchanging safety for revenue.

Six U.S. cities have been found guilty of shortening the amber cycles below what is allowed by law on intersections equipped with cameras meant to catch red-light runners. The local governments in question have ignored the safety benefit of increasing the yellow light time and decided to install red-light cameras, shorten the yellow light duration, and collect the profits instead.

The cities in question include Union City, CA, Dallas and Lubbock, TX, Nashville and Chattanooga, TN, Springfield, MO, according to Motorists.org, which collected information from reports from around the country. This isn't the first time traffic cameras have been questioned as to their effectiveness in preventing accidents. In one case, the local government was forced to issue refunds by more than $1 million to motorists who were issued tickets for running red lights.
The report goes on to note these are just instances that have been identified, and there may be more out there, and urges visitors to send in their own findings.
