Dumb and Costly Mistake with Driver-Side Mirror Damage

I'm still kicking myself for this a year after it happened. I was backing out of a tight parking spot, looking at the backup camera on the center screen, when the left mirror hit a column and cracked open. Because of the angle at which it collided, the mirror folding forward was not enough to absorb the impact, so the plastic housing took a big hit. As you can see in the photos, the damage is limited to the black frame around the mirror. Mirror itself and outer silver shell are not affected.

When I talked to a technician at my local Toyota dealership, he said they would have to replace the entire mirror assembly. Because the mirror contains electronics for the Blind Spot Monitoring and the camera for the Bird’s Eye View system, he said the total replacement cost would be upwards of $1,500!

I can’t justify spending that amount for an otherwise fully functional mirror, especially since the damage is localized to a very specific sub-component. I patched the crack with silicone to prevent water from getting in and doing more damage (also, I live in place where it doesn’t rain often, so it’s not too much of an issue), but it hurts me to see the crack every time I step into my otherwise spotless car.

Do you guys have any advice on where I could find the black frame to replace (or even just the Part Number for it)? Any idea if it even can be replaced by itself without an entire new mirror assembly? What would you guys do?

I'd just buy a used mirror on eBay. Replacing the entire unit is probably not too hard, typically they are held in by three bolts behind the door card and I know there's only one plug. Just gotta make sure you get the heated/BSM version of the mirror. I did a quick check and saw a few under $200.

When it comes to OEM parts (not accessories) don't ever pay new dealer prices. OEM parts are priced stupidly high because usually it's insurance companies that are paying for them and not consumers. That is why the OEM shift knob is $150 while the TRD accessory one is only $80.

I have been checking eBay for a used one, but have never found one that had not just BSM, but also the camera. I guess I'll keep checking and hope that as more 8th gen Camrys hit the roads, more parts will become available. Do you know where I can find out if the 2019/2020 mirrors would be compatible with the 2018 car?

Look at lkq online or car-part.com

There are plenty of online resources.

Aliexpress too.

Why didn’t you claim your insurance?
That's some very useful information! I didn't know about lkq and car-part before, and it looks like they have something that might fit.

I didn't go through insurance simply because I didn't want my premium to go up.

I’d leave it the way it is. Unless you want to explore disassembling it, removing the trim, reshaping the curvature, and filling with fiberglass, and then paint to match. Otherwise, for that price from dealer is actually accurate. For such a small defect, I’d fix it myself because it’s not worth that much for so small detail.

I was driving on the highway when something flew off the vehicle in front of me, taking out the passenger side mirror. I can confirm that with tax and labor, the total cost to replace was around $1300. I got lucky in that the vehicle in front of me was a business van and had their number on it, that and the dash cam footage made it impossible for them to fit. They just cut me a check. Even the guy at the dealer couldn't believe how much those mirrors are.
