engine noise while accelerating

I just purchased a 2006 Tacoma double cab trd sport 2x4. I get a strange engine noise while accelerating. The Service Manager at the dealership said it was just the truck breaking in and that it would go away around 1500 miles or so. I don't know if I believe that. I was wondering if anyone else had the same or similar problem and if so did it go away.

Thanks,
Neil

Have no idea what your a talking about, if you mean a ticking noise then many people have that, say its valve line not getting enough oil, exhaust leak, normal, injector noise but no one knows for sure and Toyota says its normal.

Search ticking and you will find the post. Mine makes more noise while accelerating (of course) but nothing that I find to be abnormal.

Mine make noize too, but I just keep my eye on these type of threads to see if it is a huge problem. So far, seems like it's just the design of the engine.

I just took my truck to the stealership yesterday for the same noise. It sounds like an exaust leak to me. They said they couldn't hear it yet I took a tech for a ride and I heard it fine. It seems to start for me at about 2200 rpms. I hope they find what it is cause it pisses me off.

These engines will most likely still be ticking when the odometer hits 100k.

As for the detination, there are knock sensors that will take steps to stop detonation long before you can hear it. If it is detonation the only cure is a higher octane gas unless your truck runs abnormaly hot.

Contrary to popular belief technicians do not have a magic wand to fix "mystery" problems. Fact is if the check engine light isn't on then the engine is running as designed.

The noise that it makes is more like a flutter sound kind of like a baseball card in the spoke of a bicycle wheel.

I don't believe this to be true. If I bought a brand new electric guitar and plugged it into an amp and I get a buzzing sound along side the signal it is either A) not working as designed or B) poorly designed.

I don't think its being to anal. We are spending a large amount of money and with that is a certain reasonable level of expectation. I don't think having a very irritating noise every time I put my foot on the gas is something I should have to just live with.

If you bought a Fender the answer is B. Though thousands of musicians have made a name with a poor design.

The sound you are complaining about is normal.

The engine inside the Tacomas has a HUGE fan in there. Have you seen that sucker?

Toyota engines have always been somewhat loud IMO. They sound like a blower when they are turned on.

It's a very refined engine. It is in the 4Runners and Avalons I believe so this engine must be good.

Yeah so any way like I was saying if the check engine light isn't on the engine is operating properly.

And I'm referring to the pinging not the ticking.

Russ25ny,
Please post up when you get it back from the stealership. I'd like to hear what they said.

Just test drove a brand new 2006 Taco supreme. No curious noises to my knowledge. The thing sounded very smooth and quiet and refined. Acceleration produced the expected muffled "burble" but I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary. Also quiet at idle, even with the hood raised and observing the engine.

Engine noise

It is not only your taco that makes that "ticking" sound, I test drove about 6 of them before getting mine and all had the same "noise". The best explanation I got from the stealership (LOL) is that for the '05 and '06 model these engines came with a timing chain instead of a belt. Hence the noise. On the other side, timing chain means 'no need to change will go a lifetime'. Hope this will ease your pain as it did mine..

The noise got substantially less the more miles I put on it. After about 6K miles, it was almost all quiet. I thought it had an exhuast manifold leak when I first bought it home. I was told it is the fuel injector solenoids ticking. I guess they just need to break in.

Take v6 engine, add 24 valve alum heads, subtract roller rockers= engine noise. Get used to it. "Gee-wiz Mr. Dealer-Man, It sounds like I have an exaust leak when I kick her in the guts" Compare your engine to the real "trd" motor they use in racing....Get the picture?
Ummm... no. :ugh3:

Taco Supreme, isnt that from taco bell. For the engine noise, I don't hear any ticking sound in my Taco. It is probably the fuel map.

I had the same problem... under heavy acceleration the engine sounds like an exaust leak right under the engine or passenger's foot area.... midline truck area, i thought too it was an exaust leak... and it sounds like a baseball cad flapping in someone's spokes... toyota told me the same reason they told another member here... Timingchain is the culprit but on the other hand your engine lasts longer and no timing belt replacement needed.

i can live with that explanation. especially since i seen it from another member here who is out of state.

If the noise has shown up after you purchased the vehicle, you may have a case that something should be done to bring the vehicle back to the way it was when you bought it.

If you knew of the noise when you test drove the vehicle, the question is why did you buy the vehicle? I am amazed on how many people were aware of the noise in the vehicle they purchased and bought it anyway expecting the dealer to correct the problem after the sale.

Yes the 4L makes some noise compared to older vehicle designs. I noticed the Nissan had a lot of engine noise when I was test driving the Frontier. One Tacoma I test drove did have a lot of engine noise that I did not like. I did not purchase that one. I found one that did not, and that is what is sitting in my driveway.

If you knew of the issue in your particular vehicle before you bought, you should not have purchased the vehicle or looked for a different manufactor. Its the old saying, buyer beware"
