my 03 manual blew up - 1.8L. i found another complete car that needs work with a VVT-i 2003 auto.

are the cranks and connecting rods the same between both engines?

will a VVT run stand alone if i remove its auto and put in my manual trans?

will a VVT bolt up to my current manual in that car if i transfer computers?

donor car is 800.00, i cant find an engine at a salvage yard in my state

edit: vin lookup shows 1.8L in my manual: 1zzfe. the other car is a 2az-fe 2.4l with teh auto. different engines. so probably not gonna work? are the transmissions the same?

I doubt it! If one is a non-VVT and one is a VVT, the engine computer will be different and the wiring harness will be different plus probably many other things IMO. Even if physically it is the same, they are very different IMO. Not to mention the computer electronics for the trans

thats fair, if i have two complete cars, i cant say i have much worry about just taking a harness and computers with me.

what im more interested in knowing: what is the NAME of the 5 speed manual transmission in the 03 1zz? AND will it bolt up to a 2az-fe? a manual wont need a computer so, if the auto dies in this other 2003... could i just throw the manual in there?

also is a 2az-fe engine worth more longjevity than the 1zz? VVT adds complexity which i really dont care for these days but its still 2003 complexity so.... maybe decently reliable? i have a full shop at home so, would a rebuild on a 2azfe make more sense than a 1zzfe?

i have NOT pulled the 1zzfe yet but im assuming the crank needs replacing. i cant find a donor anywhere.

i just found some of that info. so give me your oppinion. if your going to keep a car running, which would you prefer? a 03 corolla 1zz manual or a 03 corolla 2az auto?

i can buy this 2nd car and fix its oil leaks, wheel bearings, bushings. its body is a touch better but still MN rust.
the other car has rust i was planning to cut out this summer - its got new suspension. engine is probably screwed and i cant find a 1zz donor it seems. trans felt fine when it ran. engine leaked oil and was run out by a friend.

looks like rebuild kit is 100 bucks more for the 2az?

i have a full shop at my house, weld/plasma/every tool/cnc/cranes/etc.

Well it is totally your preference of manual vs auto. You have to decide that. If you search all of the USA (maybe Canada too as your are close to the border) for the direct replacement engine (1zz - I see your edit) and pay for shipping it is probably way cheaper and faster and easier than fixing all the stuff wrong with the $800 donor car...........................car-part.com

yes my shop next to ours orders in all over so i dont pay shipping on anything. however the cheapest engine is around two grand. i can find a short block brand new for less... just didnt want to put that much into the old car.

there are three yards that have about 6 or 7 1zz engines near me BUT none of them can find the cars... going on 3 weeks now and i have yet to see one of these donor engines in person. i did get one yard that texted me today saying they were sorry but they could not find the axle. so that was nice.

im kinda leaning that way. as nice as it would be to just get a running car right now... i dont want another big project just this second.

i have a 98 ram to swap cabs on, a 00 dakota to rebuild/reinstall the transmission on, a 06 taho to rebuild/reinstall the transmission and replace all brakes/suspension, a 99 ram that needs all new brake system and reverse went out as well as a new motor build. plus hte house remodel and half a dozen pedal/ebikes to rebuild

2003 Corolla didn't have a 2.4L available, what's the donor car? The 2.4 was only in the 09+10 XRS models. You can swap a VVT engine with wire harness and PCM into a non VVT car just fine, all the external mounting points are the same and the VVT engine is a fairly nice upgrade over the non VVT model. Not much more on peak numbers but much flatter torque curve and better fuel economy. I'm not sure if there's a pin to ground to tell the ECM it's a manual vs an auto but you can find the manual ECM pretty commonly on eBay, etc. One from a Celica works just fine as far as I know.

its a camry, i got that wrong. mine is a 1.8 corolla, the other car is a 2.4 camry.

my understanding is the 2.4 and 1.8 are totally not compatable with anything so.... i think i may be best off getting this car i have apart and rebuilding the 1zz engine. i just dont know what kind of damage is in there

The main issue with the 2az is the orientation. Intake is on the firewall side. You’ll need the engine harness along with the transmission.

Personally, the 1zz is a good engine. Don’t purchase a 2003 - 2004 1zz. Instead get a 2005 - 2008 1zz. The later years of the 1zz didn’t have an oil consumption issue. Plenty of 1zz’s out there. Toyota manufactured close to 500k corollas for NA and Canada.

later eh? ill take a look. the cost on these cars is crazy! a used cummins is cheaper than some of these 1zz's im finding........

on a side note, this would have hte c59 5 speed right? torsion LSD the only option for them? did they come factory with one or no? just poking around for a cheap lsd. (the clutch packed lsd in my little truck was 250 bucks)

I mean if you want fun and a small project then a 2ZZ+C60 would be the way to go, 8000 RPM and 180hp the 2003 Corolla from heck.

Honestly there's not much you can't fix on a 1ZZ pretty easily, the worst case would be it needs a crankshaft or the cylinders are scored too deeply to machine out.

a fun car... maybe? i found an 05 engine for 500 bucks with under 200K at a local yard just now. will check tomorrow.
i was thinking of maybe a LSD in the c59 and a turbo on the 1zz BUT i dont really have plans to do anything other htan max out MPG on this car right now.

my truck is 750hp and its summer engine build should bring be around 1200hp so ive already got a fun project. however IF i were to go into this car more.... i think id go for maximum MPG, maybe weld an AL tube frame, single seat it, and get in sub 1500Lbs.

People have put the ZZ engines in all kinds of things. There's a jet boat over in Europe running a 2ZZ, the 2ZZ gets swapped into MR2's all the time, Corolla's all the time. I've seen 1ZZ and 2ZZ dune buggies built. Outside of the oil burning with the 00-05 range they're really reliable engines. The 2ZZ never had oil consumption issues, pretty much as long as you keep the oil full and don't money shift it, it'll bang out 180hp for life. A semi local guy had an intake manifold and tune, threw down 190whp on the dyno with 200,000 miles on the engine.

297K is pretty good.......and it always seems to be the "friend" who kills 'em! Yeah the later ones they fixed the oil issue. For 500 you should get a half decent one with lower miles and a warranty.

#28 ·
nah, even used if i want a warranty im back up into 1200.00 range i think. as for lower miles... again im into 900 plus.

used parts are just crazy these days. couple years ago i needed an axle for my truck. called around and yards wanted 3500 for a dana 80 - no warranty, no testing, just out the door.

i found one on ebay for 900 that had an LSD, drop in, ready to go. well it wasnt. thank god i was rebuilding anyway for regear/lsd as it had broken bolts, bad bearings, metal all over, chipped pinion.... just a mess

It's easier to drop the engine and trans together out the bottom than it is to pull the engine out of the top. Drop the cradle with the control arms attached, tie the steering rack up to the firewall with some straps off the brake lines, then it's just the driver and passenger side mounts holding it all up there, lower the car down and rest the engine/trans on some wood blocks or a pallet or a rolling cart with enough capacity and zap the mounts loose and raise the car off the engine/trans.

Put the jack stands at the safest height. The struts won’t clear the bottom when the subframe is lowered. Once struts are removed, should be able to drop it onto jack stands to support the subframe with the jack in the middle. From there, it’ll be a matter of raising the front of the chassis for the engine to clear.

Okay guys, I found a 2005 1zzfe with 180,000 miles on it. It is being pulled next week and delivered to the shop. $500.

Is there anything I need to know or words of caution right now?
2005 - 2008 is drive by wire throttle. You’ll have to swap the throttle body from your old engine. Use your current engine harness of course. Other than that, should be straight swap.

Absolutely no idea. I bought the car a year and a half ago for $800, I can maybe message the guy and ask if he ever did it. I think it was a single owner vehicle. He was a mechanic, building a model a in his garage so I would assume he kept up on normal intervals

to whom you are both of those engine's are same just labed different as for transmissions I'm not sure if they'll match up or not as some cars or vehicles use different size or kinds of transmissions other thing to think đź’ or consider is are they both same kind of cars or from same automaker's cause generally if it's gm vehicle morjority of time they'll work almost same thing with fords and mopars do some research first before messing with them and make some mistakes" zena

They did not match up. I ended up buying a donor engine from a salvage yard. In an interesting twist the salvage yard said it came out of an automatic but turns out it was a manual so it came with flywheel and everything. The only changes I have to make was the intake manifold, throttle body and I had to 3D printing alignment tool for the clutch as the one I bought didn't come with one hang on you're not going to go straight back to bed
