Extremely poor gas mileage 2013 Corolla

Well folks it's been 14 months since I not only purchased my Corolla, but also posted how crappy the gas mileage was then, and it's even worse now! 23-25mpg! Taking it to Toyota has done absolutely nothing! And I work for, in a round about way, a company that's called JM FAMILY ENTERPRISES, who own Southeast Toyota. They import 20% of all Toyota's that come into the county! They're main import facility is in Jacksonville Fl. They handle 5 Southeastern states; Fl, Ga, Ala, North and So Carolina. I know the right execs, to speak to. No one has been able to help. The best I can get is 23-25mpg! I travel I-95 to and from work each day, and my round trip miles is 30. My highway speed is 75-80. And I don't want to hear that, that is the problem, cause it's not! I have other friends that have the same year and model, and they are getting a minimum of 30 plus mpg! Mine and their cars are autos. My rpm at 75 is 3500, which I always thought was high. I have NEVER been able to get 300 miles from a tank of gas! And none of the numbers on the dash readout equate out. My gas gage always says 90 miles at the 1st quarter after a fill up. Now mathmatically that should be 360 miles to a tank. Never gonna happen!! BTW, the car currently head just under 15, 000 miles in 14 months. Thanks for reading and listening.

Have you ever checked your mileage at a lower speed? Although a different vehicle, our Elantra gets 33.5 mpg at 65 mph, and 40 mpg at 55. I don't drive at that speed normally, but the point is that speed does make a big difference. My guess is that the engine is undersized for the vehicle, and being that the Corolla is in the same class, that may be the problem with your car as well.

Thank you doityourselfer1955. I'm going to see what I can come up with one more time. There may be a possibility that towards the end of this year I could trade it for one of the company's "pool"cars. They only get about 3,500 miles on them per year, and they get turned in each year. And they're rarely outside. Always kept in an aircraft hanger when not in use. Thanks again for your input.

The speed is part of the problem, like it or not. If you want, I can link you to some speed vs. mpg graphs taken for a multitude of cars. Those rpms are about average for a four cylinder, my other three four bangers I have driven would be about the same rpms (two automatics and a six speed). Have you been checking tire pressure? How many miles are on the car? Lots of a/c use? Lots of idling? Do you tend to jump on the gas leaving a stop? All of those will affect FE as well.

As for possible other causes, you could have a dragging brake or some engine problem causing it to go rich. A lazy O2 sensor could drop your mileage as well.

Until you do some speed tests & check what you get on a long flat road at different speeds you can't say for sure. Take some time on a day off & check what you get on the same flat piece of 10 mile road at 50 mph and also at 55, 60, 65 70 & 75 mph if you can. You may be shocked at what you find out. You need to start there though & report back to us with what you find out.

Wow! I can just see me trying to do the 1st 3 speeds you mentioned on I -95 at any time of the day or night here in So. Florida! When I'm on my way to work at 5-5:30am every day, and I'm doing 75-80, people are on my ass flashing their lights for me to move over! And I'm in the center lane, not the left fast lane! People here do 60-65, and faster on the regular city streets! I do it all the time! It's just the way it is here! I guess in other parts of the country the speeds you mentioned are doable, not here. I think if someone was to do 50-55 on I -95, the State Troopers would probably pull them over and ask them "What the hell are you doing"? Anywaythanksfor the input. Really appreciate it. I've pretty much resolved myself to the factthat nothing can be done to improve the mpg, and I'm done stressing ovover it, have been for quite awhile now.

Hmm, well I don't let other people do the driving for me. Especially when there are other lanes in which to pass...but that's definitely an acquired skill. Yes, I consider that a skill more than anything. It's hard to get used to.

Another thought that hit me today was the use of A/C. We had a warm day today & I had the A/C on in my Corolla & thought about the mpg hit that you take. You living in Florida I'm sure that going 75-80 mph with the A/C on will get you pretty poor mpg. All these things make a difference. Have you done the test I said to do? That will prove if you do see great mpg at lower speeds that everything is normal.

A/c is about a 6-7mpg hit for my Echo. Probably closer to 5mpg in the Corolla.
3500Rpm at 75mph seems excessive to me in a AT. On my old 5-speed MT 5SFE does about that same rpm at the same speed. I know AT have taller drive gears so there's something wrong with that picture. Or probably engine is really underpowered which doesn't make sense with currect automotive technology.
Mine is at 3000 rpm @ 75 mph. Has been that way since day 1.

Either you have it in 3 or there is something wrong with your ECU not allowing your torque converter to lock up.
I think we may be on to something here. With the combo of A/C use and the rpm's being too high it would kill the mpg. I'll bet that it's in 3rd gear. My mom rented a Corolla a couple years ago & had it in 3rd gear from Albuquerque, NM to Vancouver, WA. She never realized how the shifter worked until she got up here & I showed her. The drive back was much better she said!
