Came across this online. Anyone done this? Apparently makes the engine super quiet! I would love to disable this if it is real. Anyone have Carista?

I don't recall seeing it on my carista app.

But there is also this thread:

ANC is common on larger upgrade audio GM's ...essentially always on generating a counter audio wave to neutralize sound waves in the environment....something like noise cancelling earphones.

Hybrids also have a Gov't mandated noisemaker under the hood, especially loud in reverse, to alert pedestrians. The Rav4h does not have an ANC system.....no idea if in the Highlander, but if it does I would definitely use it because it works just fine in my Silverado.. The new gen 4 banger compared to the V6 is designed loud by nature and pushing the hybrids Power meter to the limit will wake the dead both inside and outside the vehicle.

That ESE is something else and looks like some kind of kludge to quiet the engine by modifying operating characteristics. The new gen 4 banger has two fuel systems, induction port and DI, plus variable valve sequencing shifts between two the Otto cycle and simulated Atkinson cycles.

Evidently, Toyota engineers designed the engine to run in port vs. DI to prevent latter's carbon fouling of the valves and Atkinson vs. Otto to save fuel at the expense of noise.....and the CPU determines the conditions where when to control each system and cycle. Since you never get something for nothing reprogramming the CPU to modify operating times will effect sound level, power and/or engine life......exactly how?....unless one knows best not to play with non OEM operating parameters.
