I am trying to help a friend fix his dash. The instrument lights work intemittently and the speedometer needle flickers all the time. I have seen several posts about this but no one states what the problem actually is. What is wrong with the car; what must I do to remedy this?

My friend says that when the lights are out, the fuel guage does not work, if that sheds any ilght on this. I had a 1979 Cutlass that had a really crappy guage cluster that got all distorted from the heat put off by the instruments and lights. I had epoxy, hot glue, paper clips, jumper wires and other 'rigged' repairs to keep the lights and tach operating. Is this a similar situation? My friend says that he has been told that this is a common problem - I figured that there were some standard fixes to look at...
