heater core hose routing

I can't seem to find the answer to this question anywhere. So, here's a diagram of the engine:

I have the straight "to heater" hose attached to the lower port on the firewall, which then goes to the heater core.

I have the squiggly "from heater" hose attached to the upper port on the firewall.

Is this correct? I'm not getting any heat and I'm wondering if it's because this is wrong or because there's too much air in the system. I already swapped them the other way, and I didn't get heat either.

Direction does not really matter. I would connect the "to heater" hose to the water valve.

Is the water valve (on firewall) open?

There's a water valve? I have 2001 camry 4cyl.

But now I'm getting heat. thanks for the reply though.

There should be somewhere. It is connected to the heat adjustment lever on the dash. Unless the 2001 uses blend doors to regulate heat.

I have six XV20s, and have not found a water valve on any of them.

Right, I don’t think the Gen4 has them. If it did, it would be right at the firewall where the heater hose enters.

Correct, the valve is no longer used in modern vehicles (in regards to the Camry, from Gen4), instead the air diverter door in the HVAC unit behind the dash adjusts where the air comes from and how much, and the heater core inside of it is full hot all of the time.
