I need somebody from Toyota to explain to me how they can exclude only the Highlander from being covered in the recall on the blizzard pearl paint problem when they know there
is a problem. I have a 2012 Highlander with 39,000 miles that the blizzard pearl paint is popping off on the top and bear metal is showing now. I'm thinking about putting a sign on top and putting it in front of the Toyota dealership Beware of this problem that Toyota wont take care of :poop:

I had/have a problem with silver or whatever you'd call it on my tail gate. Rust from top down through the paint and its so thin. No under coating on the body or primer etc. The arguably have the worst paint process of any of the many many autos I have owned/own. As for doing anything, after 3 years they absolve themselves of any and all paint issues. Thats what customer service told me in so many words.

I once heard if correct its an anodize paint process used. The put a charge on the vehicle in a chamber to attract and coat the metal electro statically. Likely why it so thin you cannot even feel it where paint is gone.

Anodizing is not a paint process. Anodizing is a method of using zinc as a sacrificial metal on steel. Most automotive finishes are water borne electrostatic finishes. Toyota like many companies building vehicles in the US had some true issues thanks to the EPA restrictions from the late 80's into the middle late 90s until they could get the issues straightened out. Toyota was no immune in it's US plants. Typically cars built in the plants in Japan did not exhibit issues as they were not under the thumb of the EPA.

I couldn't think of the name. But Electrostatic is what I was implying. What shocked me is there aren't any coats under the paint for preventing rust, priming layers as I'd seen on other vehicle. Its extremely thin and even the clear coat is not noteworthy.

It would vary with the vehicle. Mine is just under the rear window gate on the curve as the metal straights out. I posted pictures in a thread on this a good year ago. Dealer got me Toyota touch up paint but it did not stop all the location it occurred at on the tail gate which are all along that metal curve under the window.

Are you the original owner? Was the car repainted? Even if you bought the car brand new it does not mean it was not repainted. Years ago I purchased a brand new vehicle from a well known reputable dealer in the Chicago area close to O'Hare Airport. I got the car home and while I was giving it it's first wash and looking at it carefully, I started seeing bits of masking tape, then over spray, and orange peel. I called the dealer and asked about the situation. They did a trace on the car. It turned out the car had been damaged in transport. The transport company took it to a body shop. Repaired it and sent it on to the dealer. Where I bought it. The dealer was nice enough to take the car back, and exchange it for another one. Being the owner of more than a few Toyota products I have not seen the issues you describe except on one that I knew had body work done to it due to some minor mishaps.
