How can i add power to my 2001 Toyota Camry 4cyl?

I have a 2001 toyota camry with a 2.2L 4 cylinder engine and i wanted to know how I can add power and most importantly make the acceleration better.

The car is good for cruising around but i need some extra power especially since the accleration is so bad that in some cases I feel unsafe because of how slow it accelerates. I also go on a lot of bike trips and the engine is really slow to get up some big hills. I thought about maybe having to sell it and get a v6 but i would lose a couple grand so i was wondering instead that i could just add parts and get the power i need that way.

I thought about maybe putting a turbo in it but then my friend told me that it wouldnt help acceleration because of the turbo lag and i thought it might not be worth all the money. Also i was thinking about doing little things like cold air intake, free flowing exaust system and little things like that but i dont really know exactly what i should do and what the 4 cylinder engine can handle while still retaining some reliability.

i'm kind of a noob when it comes to modding cars so I really appreciate all the help, thanks guys.

There really isn't much you can do to a 5S-FE engine to make more power.

For what it would cost to modify the engine to get decent performance, selling your car and then buying another Camry V6 is the cheapest solution.

Enjoy your car for what it is.

i can promise there is little you can add to the 4cyl to make much of a difference. if ya need the extra power then get the V6. you can also consider gettin an older gen3 camry V6. just as reliable and would be cheaper...but older.

You can probably put a 1UZ or 2UZ in there, then maybe forced induction. 30 PSI sounds good decent.

You could also do a 5speed transmission swap. You'll probably make more power to the ground but not overall.

Seriously though, short of forced induction or engine swap, you can't really do much that will make a significant difference.

enjoy the car for what it is. you should have thought about power output before u got the car. I have a 01 camry with 2.2 5spd. yes its slow, but the stickshift makes it more fun.
if you still want to go faster , although this is not the car, do the obvious
cold air intake, some sort of a free flowing exhaust (do they even make aftermarket exhaust for camry's?) upgraded ignition,
put it this way, if you can remove weight u improve power to weight ratio
i thought about removing the spare tire and teh seats in teh back but man that's just ghetto, and dont use the ac when u want the power

I would be fine with doing the 5 speed swap but how much would it cost? I really dont know much about working on cars so i would have to just turn it over to a shop to handle it. I also worried about how it would look on the inside with the gear changer and adding the pedals and stuff, would it still look decent? I'm a bit dissapointed though because im willing to spend 1500-2000 dollars to make the acceleration safer and help it handle hills better. I'm thinking that i might have to sell it and get a v6 but it's gonna be a huge hassle and i'm gonna loose around 2 grand anyway. I'm gonna wait for some more opinions before I do anything so keep it comin, thanks guys.

Back to the topic, i say DO NOT mess up ur good gas daily drive.

If u want power, buy another "tuner" and make it ur project car. At that point, If u still want a camry or something cheap and unique, the only camry worthy buying is the gen 3 v6 se 5 speed coupe.
