In some part of the world they use the word "run in" to describe people driving a new car and keep below a certain speed during the first 5K km or so so as to let the engine parts gradually adapt to the working condition.. Do I still need to observe this guideline with my HL?

This is a source of much contention.
Some will say baby it, some will say drive it like you stole it.

Do some research and decide which method you would like to subscribe to :)
I personally subscribe to the drive it like you stole it to method to seat the rings.

While you are waiting on your new HL, read over the owners' manual and you'll already know a lot about your new SUV. Here's a link to it:

If the above link doesn't work, you can find them at the Toyota Owners' website.

Check page 193 in the owners' manual - it has a section titled, "Breaking in your new Toyota."

There are a lot of smart people on this forum who know a lot about engines (I do not!). I'm sure they will offer an opinion. I usually follow what's in the manual.

I wouldn't drive it like I stole it and I wouldn't baby it either. What I do is drive it somewhere in between. The one thing most manufactures suggest is to vary you speed. Don't drive it at only one speed for any length of time. I'm currently breaking in my HL and I'll drive it this way for the first 1000 miles.

The other recommendation is if at all possible don't slam on our brakes for first few hundred miles.
