I ask of this b/c i often find myself doing ~100-120 km/h which is equivalent to ~74mph.

now the highway/freeway limit here in toronto is 100 km/h and most of the time if i push it to 120, there is considerable noise from the engine bay...not any "bad" noise but just noise that signifies that the engine is working hard.

and the tach is hovering around 2400-2600 rpms. i've pushed my car to 140 km/h (87 mph) once but that is the last time i'll ever do it...seems to me that the car is working too hard to maintain that speed.

should i be driving it beyond 120?...is it safe to do so with regards to "mechanical components"?...waht parts could be harmed if i maintain those speeds?

thanks for your time.

What kind trim level do you have or if you know, 3-, 4-, or 5-speed transmission? In my opinion, doesn't sound like you're pushing too hard. Just make sure the engine oil is topped off and transmission fluid up to level.

haha...engine only has 130hp..thats why car does that but do
have VVT-i?? almost like VTEC in hondas, Engages when engine goes over 4,000 RPM and up..but 2 different vvt-i controls on Intake Camshaft depending upon rpm car using..

mines sounds sweet wit my new Cams
ordered pistons 11:1
and maybe springs, retainers, valves if worn out

I have not driven, nor will I ever go above the posted speed limits because it's illegal.

but if I (and not me personally, but indefinite person "A") had (but wouldn't because it's illegal) driven on the highway, I (again, not me personally) have (but won't) comfortably cruised at 80-85mph (but never in the United States, because it's against the law) without feeling like the car is being strained in a 4-speed auto

i have the OD button and i feel the car shift 3 times so that means 4 speed correct?

the car usually shifts gears around 2200 rpms

even though the speedo has the highest speed marking at 180km/h, i think it's too stressful to push near 130-140 km/h

i was just asking for opinions, thats all. thanks.

only 100 mph? I've hit the limiter and still under 5K rpm.. that's like 180 kph or abouts

had no mechanical issues with doing it again right after

it was still speeding up but i had to slow down b/c i was doing this somewhere i shouldnt have been. ooopps. next time i save it for the track. later that day i brought it to~85 for fun, but it just made me worry about why the car couldnt get past 75 mph right after getting to 100 and slowing down. i dont think it was something mechanical though.

I've revved my moms corolla up to 4k or so, but i have to be careful with that one so it doesn't happen much. It is auto.
With my ae92 I rev to 5k before I shift on the normal streets just for the hell of it. i took it up to 100mph before and it was at 5.5k or so and horrifically loud. lol

But you are not driving your car hard at all.

And don't speed it's bad

Commuting I regularly cruise my 4-speed auto at 75-80mph. Fcuk speed limits, they're just unofficial taxes anyway. Car runs fine, smooth as butter. But I do take care of it. Transmission flushes, coolant flushes, regular oil changes, monitoring tire pressure etc etc. When accelerating, sometimes I'll knock it down to 2nd with the selector and ride the engine out to 5k, 5500 sometimes. Other than a bit of oil burning, no real issues. 140K on my Rolla and still running strong. The car can take a whoppin sometimes, but don't beat on it regularly or you'll be sorry, in the wallet.

Hello boredstudent3.

I typically have my corolla floored when I want it to move with any urgency. My 2002 corolla with a 5spd will put the needle past the 180km/h mark in 4th gear.

I have had a few times where I just kept the car pegged at 180 for about 30-40 seconds. or simply bounced around from 150 to 180 as I watch out for the spots cops do their radar money making.

My understanding is that the ECU that controls the cars efficiency, does not allow the car to actually give you full power. What I'm saying is that once your into the 100+ range, full and 3/4 throttle are practically the same. So don't feel bad that your flooring the car when it's effort is only 3/4.

I keep my car in good tune and notice that after it comes off the highway. It's post "run" operation is eager. A tap on the gas results in the car wanting to go faster. It's like the car actually wants to pull you along as opposed to you forcing it to move.

To me this is a good thing. My average highway speeds is 120 -130. perfectly safe for the 5spd. @130 the car is at 3k of the max 6K RPM. This is essentially nothing.

The stock suspension kind sux though. If you catch uneven roads the suspension wallows once you pass 130.

drive safe and have fun man.

thanks for the replies folks, now that i think about it, i'm not driving it that hard compared to some others out there...

but i do notice that there is noise coming from the engine bay when travelling at the higher speeds...and generally my car's tach does not go over 3k

just last night when i was travelling back from niagara falls i was doing about 110-120 constant w/o cruise control...lol...my foot was tired from holding the pedal in that position...at 120 km/h the car is at ~2200-2400 rpms...

off topic: i haven't done a transmission flush in a while (i forget the last time the fluid was changed)...should i do a driveway drain and fill or go for the flush?...a mechanic at an independant shop told me that a flush shouldn't be done b/c it might force the small metal debris into the gears and cause them to jam up...possible?

so flush or drain and fill (just like oil change)?

also, some ppl mentioned that by doing a drain and fill they experienced the tranny "slipping"...can someone describe to me what it feels like when driving?...does the car shift from 2nd to 3rd and then instantly drop back down to 2nd? are there jerking/jolting movements felt in the car?

thanks for your time.

I wouldn't use that mechanic. Drain and fill. Start car, cycle thru the gears. Drain, fill, repeat until fluid is new looking (bright red).

I used Amosil ATF for my last flush and couldn't be happier.

i push my car somewhat hard (i've got a vid on my youtube page if anyone wants to see it) the fastest ive been in this thing is 110+mph and i dont think i'll go past that cuz this thing starts to sway side to side. but its not the best car for high speeds so i cant complain :)

thats a one and done on a place where the po-po dont roam :) i put KYB's all around when i got the car but the rear sags when i put the sunday groceries in it, and the tires rub:thumbsdow dam i knew I shoulda got those tokico's

i have HKS speed regulator :D
only really use it at track anyways (doubt ever could on SoCal freeways or streets)
..good stuff when you see 01 corolla PAST that 120 limit...hahahaha
like my slow bunny. haha.GREAT TRACK car though with suspension mods
