How often do dealers get new inventory?

How often do dealers get new inventory? I'm in the NorCal region. I'm sure it depends on many things but curious on average if new cars get delivered weekly, monthly... Of course I'm just interested in 2021 Highlanders as I'm ready to buy in a week or two and I'm picky and only want one model with the desired color combo, HiHy Platinum Ruby Red in Carmel.

I know there's a chip shortage right now, Feb '21, probably not helping matters any with covid and everything. I'm aware of the regional distributors giving out the most popular combinations in larger numbers but I have little info how popular my selection is. Judging from buyatoyato.com with my combo there's only 7 in Norcal in HiHy Ruby Platinum and none in my interior Carmel. Does that mean low or high demand, I have no clue.

I've been checking buyatoyoata.com and truecar.com for inventory the last few weeks in my region and there was only 1 with my combo. It was removed yesterday so I assume it got sold so I'm wondering how often they stock the dealers.

Guessing it's any ones guess right now as times are crazy. I've yet talked to any dealer, I assume they can see a little more in future, possibly what's in transit.

In general, they could get deliveries a couple of times a week. Deliveries of what you want is a different question of course.

There are two variables at work - one is how much demand there is for that color combination, and the second is how many of those they plan to build. I have no clue on either, so it's a big guessing game. Typically they make the most white, black, and silver as those are the three most popular colors for cars in general.

This recent discussion about ordering what you want will shed a little light on the process. The powers that be plan about 4-8 weeks out, so that's how far in advance the dealer can see in the computer. I hear you on the "picky" thing and I have ordered several Toyotas over the years in order to get the color and option combo I want.

Surprisingly, it's not much different. Sure, you can probably press harder and shave a little more off on a car that's going to sell immediately. But it's not like you have to pay a premium to order one. If the dealer was going to start negotiating at $2500 below MSRP for something on their lot, I've gotten the same offer on the one I wanted to order. They don't start higher just because the car doesn't exist yet.

Easy Peezy!

1. Build your desired vehicle online. - done
2. via the website, contact one or two dealers to obtain the price.
3. decide which dealer you want to deal with.
4. Schedule a meeting with their online sales group.
5. If its not on the lot
6. look at available inventory at other dealers
7. If not in dealer inventory they can look at cars inbound on the ships and their arrival dates.
8. I had multiple vehicles to choose and was able to look at the options. I choose the better sound system.
9. The vehicle should be delivered to the dealer 2-3 days after arrival.

It took me about 45 min to get a phone call back from the dealer.
I went in on a Saturday and decided which car I wanted.
I went in the following Saturday to pick-up the car.
(I could have gone in mid-week but was working out of town at the time.)
Wrote a check and drove away.

BTW this also works if your 85 yr old father needs to buy a new truck...

Good luck and enjoy your vehicle.
