Hybrid Max w/ 8-speed?

IMO, the main shortcoming of the Hybrid Max powertrain is that it has the old 6-speed rather than 8-speed that comes with base 2.4L. As shown in Car & Driver testing, this gives the Hybrid Max significantly worse highway MPG vs base engine (31mpg vs. 27mpg @ 75mph for Lexus TX350 vs TX500h) despite having the same gas engine. This means overall the Hybrid Max is not much more fuel efficient than the base engine.

In the recently revealed Land Cruiser, Toyota introduced the Hybrid Max powertrain but with an 8-speed. Do folks think this could trickle down to GH, Crown, and TX? It'd be nice for the hybrid to offer both better performance AND efficiency.

We plan to buy the TX500h this year and would be disappointed if it gets upgraded to the 8-speed soon.

While a six-speed automatic is likely to be less efficient than an eight-speed, all other things considered, I think that the Hybrid Max's lower MPG ratings have more to do with the HP and torque of that engine than the transmission.

It all boils down to gearing. Toyota could have given it a taller overdrive 6th gear, but they didn’t.
And 8-speed doesn’t guarantee better mileage, as they could have given it the same ratio on 8th gear as the 6-gear. But the ratio spacing would have been smaller, leading to a smoother driving experience

if one could really dream, they could wish for the LC hybrid setup, 4-speed automatic plus the e-cvt

The regular hybrid achieves the same thing, more low end torque from the electric motors AND to save fuel thanks to the power split device.

Especially when you compare the performance of the RAV4 with the gas vs hybrid.... the hybrid is faster AND gets much better fuel economy.
