Idler arm or just bushing ? (Howto and difficulty ?)

Truck in question is a 89 22r with 160k miles, not a beater but not a pristine puppy either. (It's a truck man ;)

What are the chances of needing the entire front end dropped and replaced vs. just popping in a new idler arm bushing, or idler assembly ?

The symptoms are: creeks over RIGHT HAND SIDE bumps. wanders at speed with pavement irregularities.

Should I try just the bushings, or order a full idler arm + bushings ?

Thanks folks.

replace it as an asembly--
available aftremarket and not that expensive--
two bolts and one nut---- (should have a 'pickle fork), but even if you don't -- its not a big problem if you have a hammer and know where to smack it !!!

To check which ball joints are bad, just put the front end up on jack stands so it will be easier to move things. Now push in on the tires. Just shove up against them and see if you can hear, or feel play. Next, just go over the entire front end pushing a pulling on the idler arm, outer-tie-rod-ends, center-link, spindles, pitman arm, everything. Also, grab the wheel at about 2 and 8 and try to pull it and push it off the spindle. If it moves, you may have play in your wheel bearings. You can also check for wear on the tires. Don't just throw money at the problem! Replacing everything under the front end could get very costly very fast. So if it isn't broke, don't spend money fixing it!
