Will this change make it easier to sell the IM when it has the Corolla name attached?
I would tend to think so. At least it would ring something in the ear of Joe Public. But would it rend the hatchback desirable if the market don't want it ? No.
In any event, it's closer to the reality : iM is a Corolla.
Another point, albeit trivial, is about statistics. In Canada, Honda Civic have been the best-selling car for years... except if Corolla and Matrix (at the time) were considered together.

Ditto.
I think it's a good move, particularly if the featureset from the Corolla moves into the iM as well.
While I want a vehicle with a trunk, I'm sure the market would be strong for a Corolla iM S-Plus/Premium

The Yaris iA doesn't make much sense, but it may only be temporary.

At least they didn't go the Ford route and call it the "Echo-II"

I checked one of these out at my dealership when I was getting an oil change. I really like them. The whole hatch area is very nice. The sedan does have a lot more storage but the IM makes a strong case. Not sure I like the enfotainment system better though. It has this large flat area to the right of it.

I wonder if there are any major mechanical/features differences.

This is a great decision changing the names, especially the FRS to 86. But I find it funny they are keeping the iM and iA names. Sure it distinguishes the Corolla sedan from the hatch and the Yaris from the Mazda, but what was wrong with Corolla lift back or something along that nature. I wouldn't call this a complaint as I'm glad these cars are getting the Corolla and Yaris names.

I never cared for the Matrix name. I too don't see that name coming back. Toyota was originally going to carry over the Scion model names but due to popular demand they are changing them. I think if they were going to resurrect the Matrix name they would of done it with this announcement.

I wish the Corolla iM was available when we were shopping in November '14. I wanted my wife to look at the Corolla and when we went on the lot she spotted the Prius liftback and my argument for the Corolla was lost.
If the hatchback iM were available I am sure that would have been taken over the Prius.
Oh well, hopefully the iM is still available in 8 years when we shop again.

With the move, hopefully Toyota can offer the iM with LEDs and a moonroof like the Corolla S+.

I just learned this today, the Scion IM becoming the Corolla IM, but my question is, doesn't the IM have a different engine made with Mazda? Are they keeping that engine or putting a 2ZR-FE or 2ZR-FAE like normal Corollas into them? I could be wrong as I notice the 2016 IM has 137HP at 6100 RPM and 126 Ft-lbs of torque at 4000. Those number are VERY close to the 2ZR-FE and 2ZR-FAE but not the same.

Does the 2016 Scion IM have a Mazda motor and are they keeping it? Maybe I am confusing the IM with another Scion car. I know one or more have Toyota-Mazda collaborated engines in them.
