Is it crazy to trade in a 2022 Highander Hybrid for a 2023?

I've never done something like this, but it seems that I can get what I paid for my 2022 platinum, and probably more. The new ones are not that much more expensive and have a few new features:
  • Digital instruments (not sure I want this one)
  • Non-glare screen
  • New Multimedia system
  • Full-screen maps
  • Non-glare screen
  • Power folding mirrors
  • Digital rearview mirror (mine was supposed to have one but didn't)
  • Wireless CarPlay
  • Wireless charger in the dash tray, and hopefully this one works
  • A physical button to recirculate air instead of a touch screen option in the climate menu

You're right! Not only has it disappeared but NO review mirror is listed for Platinum or Bronze Editions. Damn! That was a feature I'd really like to have but it's looking like that's not going to be an option anymore.

I spoke with my dealer yesterday and they have their first shipment coming in but there are no Platinum models in the shipment.

Good concept and probably a worthwhile thing to do with one exception, it will be extremely difficult to get a plat hybrid so I don’t think you can do it even if you wanted to. You could prob do it if you trade down to a limited but that won’t be easy either

re the rearview mirror, I believe is going to be a 200-300 option as opposed to standard

Yep, no platinums (hybrid). I’ve made this reference a few times. Manufacturers are trying to produce as many mainstream vehicles as they can so volumes of platnium or platinum equivalent trims are harder to get.

I’m going to sit in the sidelines a little longer in hopes they will start producing them soon but at some point, I may reluctantly pivot to the limited

Yes, nice idea if you can make it happen. My suspicion is the wireless charger isn’t going to work any better than the one in the console but at least the console is uncluttered. We’ll see.
I’d add one more caution…. Although the folding mirrors seems like a great idea I have had friends with this feature (albeit on different brand), that when broken was horrendously expensive to fix. This is probably more the rule than the exception on many repairs these days with many systems. We’ll see. Good luck.

'It seems?' What does that mean? Will anyone give you that amount for your vehicle in cash? Or re you talking about some 'tread-in' transaction offered by a car salesman?

If you go into the dealership and secure a deal 'in writing,' for the outright purchase of a vehicle, fold up the paperwork, put it in your pocket and tell them you need to think it over and will be back in the morning. When you do return, drive the vehicle you would like to trade-in and explain that you'll take yesterday's deal, if they take your vehicle in trade. When it comes time to effect the sale, simply deduct what they want you to pay from what they wanted you to pay in the deal the day before and you'll see what they are actually 'paying' for your trade-in.

These guys are experts in creating 'the fog of sales' and we are rank amateurs!

I buy my cars for cash, outright and sell my old rides for cash in the local market. Now, I've only been doing this for sixty years, but I've never seen a deal where the prior year's model could be sold for more than the current year's replacement though I have no doubt that many buyers have left dealerships believing they'd just negotiated such a deal.

As we've seen, you can certainly fool some of the people some of the time - especially if you are trying to fool them into believing something they want to believe.

I usually keep my vehicle in warranty and trade fairly often I usually shoot for 3 to 3500 per year trade up. I think they like the trade-ins cuz if they certify them they have one heck of a warranty and are very lucrative to sell.

Try seeing what offers Carvana, Zoom, Carmax etc will give you. You will probably pay over MSRP for the new one, probably $5k to $10k. Sequoia’s are selling in socal area for $20k over MSRP. This add on cost may just wipe your gains on the 2022. You need to get selling prices for your vehicle and also see how much a new one will be.

Here in the LA area I pad 7K markup for my platinum in July. Been checking around and all Hybrid Highlanders are still being sold even before they get on the lot for 8 to 12K over MSRP. I can't imagine having to trade mine in only to turn around and pay another markup. Terrible financial decision IMO. Now, if I can trade in for or near what I owe on it and get into a 23 at MSRP then I would do it. Incredibly hard to find Limited or Platinum models though.

you may want to check in real life the wireless car play. i have 2023 camry xse and i have to use the usb cord to get andorid auto and my husband has to plug his phone for apple car play. i do not believe toyota is savvy enough yet for the wireless integration. i have the wireless charger it works ok (charges slow).
