So ...... I am a fairly intelligent guy (retired navy nuc reactor inspector) ... an underachiever at times. What is the purpose of "the cover" on either the six or four?
It looks good. Seriously, some people don't like to look and see all the hoses. But the real reason is it discourages people from doing their own maintenence. It also helps to lessen the noise from the engine bay.

That's it? Strickly cosmetic (aside from some noise reduction)?

If that is the case, why not the same cover for both? As the proud owner (and diehard believer) of the four-banger, I like the look of the larger cover.

Well that and some people get nervous taking things apart. And the more things you have to take apart to get to like the MAF sensor etc. discourages people. So throwing on a cover with a few bolts usually makes people drive their vehicle to the stealership rather then do their own tinkering.

and pretty much every automaker puts the covers on these days too. only reason i could ever come up with was it was purely cosmetic, never thought that it might deaden some engine noise

If you look under our covers, it has some dampening material.
