Lifetime Oil Changes

I'm in the market for a new Totoya car and the toyota dealer near me is promoting lifetime oil changes on all their cars. Is there a catch somewhere? I feel I may get hit with a cost somewhere else or later on.

My cousin who works for a Honda dealer says he has heard stories that places like this will change your oil at no cost but tell you all these other problems with your car and sometimes causing problems so they can make money later. Is that true? That's scary!

Yeah I would read the fine print, a few dealerships do that here but you have to do ALL the scheduled maintenace besides the oil changeds to qualify.

Its a good perk, but really what does an oil change cost to do it yourself every 5000 miles, 15-20 bucks?

Nothing is free.....ever! Oil changes are a way to get your car into the shop to look for other issues and push other services, but thats no supprise. As Dana said, take a really close look at the fine print to make sure theres no other qualifications for the "free" oil change. They always make up the money somewhere...

Why would you want someone who doesn't care about your
car as much as you do, touching it? Especially for such
an easy procedure that only requires a few tools.

Back before I saw the light and took my car to shops for
oil changes, they'd 'find' a lot problems that just had to
be fixed but somehow I had not previously noticed.

Like others have said, that lifetime oil change might be factored into your purchase price...do your homework and make sure you shop around. And as always, read the contract before you sign.

i got 7 years free oil change with my car and thought it was a sweet deal....yea it was until i went in for my second oil change ... like the first one i handed my keys and signed the papers....two hours later i got handed a bill of $135 Canadian. i was like wtf happend there ? they said they had to do a routine checkup for brakes and fluids, change the air cabin filter and rotate the tires....and this was when the winter just started and i had just replaced my all seasons with new winters. they didnt need rotation!!! moral of the story is its not free...they will charge u for maintainance on a new car which u do not need....thats what you got warranty for ! i got my third free oil change but now i am getting off their program cause there is no way every year i am giving them $135 and an entire day when all it will cost me is like $30 everytime for myself to do it !!

I say make sure it's really free as others have meantioned. Take it though, free is free! About them bringing up issues that need addressing, just say thank you and walk away. About getting charged for things you didn't ask for, there is a reason why shops make you sign for things before they start to work on your car. It is to say you consented to the work--what is listed. If you don't pay, its their proof in court. In the same token they just gave you free parts and labor if they have a piece of paper that isn't the same one in your posession and does not have your signature.

For the US at least.

Why I would use it..for the labor anyway. They usually use the stock stuff so I would bring in my own filter and some premium synthetic, hell, you can afford it now with free labor.

At a dealer you may get scammed, however I must say my pops bought a lifetime oil deal at fletcher back when they sold them and he's gotten his money back ten-fold on that one because he just ignores all the BS services they tell him he needs. Needless to say fletcher stopped selling these lifetime things...
