Lift gate opening by itself

Hi, I have a 2018 RAV4 Hybrid with a power lift gate, which I bought a year ago November. Twice since I’ve had it, I’ve come outside and found the lift gate is open! Fortunately nothing has been stolen out of it.

I don’t remember the first time, it was last year; but the second time was this morning. It was around freezing out.

When I try to open the lift gate with the remote, I have to hold the button down hard right next to the door for it to open, so I don’t believe I could have hit the button accidentally and had it open.

I noticed some cardboard that was in the back for recycling may have gotten shut in the lift gate. The only things I can think are, either that somehow kept it from locking (despite not blocking the lock), or the cold did something to the circuits somehow.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

No, the remote stays in my pocket.

The car doors did unlock once, which I think was from me hitting the button in my pocket by accident. I walk by it on my dog walks, too - and I know I can unlock from my apartment. I often relock it just to be sure. This is my first car with a remote, so it does take getting used to!

I will definitely play with it and see what happens. It would be ironic if I have trouble opening it with the remote when I’m next to it, but it got triggered from a distance!

Hi again, I think the button got pushed in my pocket after all.

It seems that if I try to open the back when another door is open, the remote button won’t work; but if I have the doors closed, it will. Don’t know why that would be! But, at least I think I figured it out. I just have to use the button on the dash if the door is open - and be really careful with the remote in my pocket!

Thanks again for your suggestions!

I have RAV4 Hybrid 2019 XLE, and my trunk opened 5 times by itself since I bought it. I don’t know what ‘s happened. My keyfob cannot be the cause because it was in my pocket out of the range of the the RAV4. My remote access notified me that my trunk was opened. Luckily, nothing was stolen. I thought it was an isolated case, but when I Googled, I ran into this forum. My RAV4 Hybrid 2019 XLE has the same problem as yours. I hope Toyota has a fix for it.

What app notifies you when the lift gate is open ? We have a 2014 and twice now our lift gate has opened by itself .

Thanks for posting! I didn’t think I was within range, but now I think I may have been. It turns out the fob has a pretty wide range. Mine will unlock from inside my apartment. Of course, I’m not saying you are wrong about being out of range.

I haven’t had it happen again, so I haven’t looked further. The only option I found online was to “fix” the remote.

I actually haven’t contacted Toyota, though that seems like the obvious thing to do! Please share what they say.

Thanks!

The difficulty is that I cannot reproduce the problem at will so Toyota technicians can troubleshoot. I suspected that some RAV4 keyfob may have identical signal with my RAV4 and be able to unlock my trunk. My RAV4 is the fifth generation series and yours is the 4th generation and have identical issue. It has to do with Toyota lock/unlock keyfob system. Toyota is not great with security. I used to have Toyota Corolla LE and my friend Toyota Celica key can unlock my Corolla doors but not able to turnon the engine. That was why I don’t put any valuable inside the car.

We also have a RAV4 Hybrid and my husband has gone out for the morning dog walk and found his car with the trunk open. It has happened twice now. We actually have two of these cars and one of our neighbors has a non-hybrid. The neighbor is a football field away from us, so we don't think it's them and this has not happened to my car yet. We are keeping a careful watch now because our bedroom window is right above where we park the cars. My car is parked closest to the house but I keep my keys downstairs in the key box. My husband keeps his keys on his bedside table.

My wife has a 2018 Rav4 Limited we bought new and the gate has opened by itself more times than we can count. Garage, parking lots. It is very random. We have complained to Toyota several times. Once as we were talking to the service writer by the car it opened right before his eyes. He said did you push the remote? I pointed to the remote sitting on top of the dash and said, nope, it is right there in the car. No fix. No clue what is wrong.
