Hi again. Brief recap: One of my two car keys was stolen in a burglary of my apartment. I'm concerned about the thief returning in the future to steal my new 2016 Corolla. Follow up: I talked to insurance claims and the rep stated my policy won't cover extra services, such as changing the locks or key chip. Darn.
My Toyota dealership charges an exorbitant fee to do this service. In doing online research, I found local independent locksmiths who offer to replace and reprogram car keys for people who have lost all keys and are stranded. Yelp reviews shows lots of satisfied posts saying they saved hundreds by avoiding the dealership fees.
Is this for real? I thought only the manufacturer could alter the key programming. Anything I need to consider before letting a local locksmith mess with my new car?
