Low Beam Suddenly Out

I started my 2008 Highlander Hybrid this evening and the low beams were suddenly not working. Turn signals, interior lights, and high beams are all fine. I assumed it was a fuse but noticed when I looked at a fuse box diagram that the right and left low beams are each controlled by a separate fuse (42 & 43) So, how could both fuses be out at the same time? Is there something else going on? As I said the high beams work fine. I have never had to replace a fuse in this vehicle. But since everything else works fine, I figured it was just a fuse replacement.

I didn't have the time to go over anything so I took it to my mechanic and he tested some working bulbs and they lit up on low. Why both low beams decided to stop working at the same time is a puzzle to me but if the new bulbs go out, I will have it checked by an auto electrical outfit. Thanks for taking the time to reply and hopefully I won't be back on this thread.

That was just a guess without doing any diagnosing of the problem, and because of the way that the circuit is setup.

It is possible that the light control circuit/relay is not switch the circuit from highbeam to lowbeam. My understanding is that the light control circuit is part of the junction block in the engine compartment.

Again, the circuits need to be checked to verify!

So, I ended up getting two new bulbs. I still don't understand why both lights would go out at once unless one had been out for a while and I didn't notice it and then when the remaining one died, I thought it was both of them. Anyway, the bulbs were both replaced and are working. Thanks for your thoughts. Love this website. It's a great place to turn to for information.

I had both low beams go out on my 78 Celica back in 1993. I was baffled and was further confused by the wiring approach used by the bulbs - center terminal is NOT the common one. Not only that, but I had never had to replace a headight on that car before.

But the real answer is simple. Both low beams did not go out at teh same time. One failed without you noticing it, because the high beams both still worked. Then later the other one failed.
