2002 Camry with factory alloys.

Discount tire tells me the lug nuts are swollen, wanted me to buy a set for ~$70 + tax.

I see they have wear on them. I usually use a 22mm socket that fits pretty snug. Aside that I see no rust nor damage to the threads etc.

Do I really need to change them? These are original to the car and they are not solid. The outer appears to be a shell. But the shell is not really loose.

Definitely swap them out. Those bi-metallic lug nuts are one of the worst ideas car manufacturers have ever had. They are only going to get worse, and eventually you won't be able to find a socket that fits. Also, the outer layer will eventually get loose. If you're planning to keep the car long term, be sure to replace them with single piece nuts.

Yes, those types of lug nuts have the outer layer that swells (gets larger) due to moisture getting between the layers and causing the inner layer to rust (which puts outward force on the outer layer and pushes it out). It will get worse. They can swell to a point where the 22mm socket will no longer fit them, and maybe a 24mm socket may not fit inside the countersunk hole in the wheel. Then you will have a problem getting them off.

Should be 21 mm. If they need 23 mm sockets then water probably got in under the end cap and the rust swelled the lugs. I think one member had the end cap getting pushed off.

I would get the correct size off Rockauto and change ALL of them. I typically use Dorman, as that's pretty much what the parts stores carry. Or you can order ones from the local dealer (or an online dealer).

There are different lengths, so make sure you get the correct one. (The ones you show in post 5 looks like the shorter version)

No, I don't believe Toyota has solid lugs for alum wheels.
