I’ve a 2013 Avalon Hybrid Touring with approximately 149,565 miles. Inverter battery, engine light and traction control lights all lit my dash board. Do I need a battery or inverter service?? My regular mechanic who has little experience with hybrids and called his supplier and asked what he should do. Supplier stated that due to car being 12 years old and having almost 150k miles it needs a battery. Does anyone know if this is an inverter issue, where Toyota wants the service at the dealership to up sell a battery or something else. Also the car never showed any sign of a battery issue. I’ve driven the vehicle regularly on long and short trips. Should I just trade the car and get a newer vehicle. Vehicle is in the suburb's of NYC. Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Car is in overall excellent condition!

update 9/27/25

On Monday 9/22/25 a new hybrid battery was installed professionally by Green Tec Auto. My filter and fan were clean no dust of any kind. I now have 36 months of worry free hybrid battery concerns. I could have gone 5e lesss expensive way of get a refurbished one with 18 months of warrant, but chose the new battery. Cost for the battery and (In home) installation was a fraction of the cost than the STEALERSHIP was asking. More than 4X less. It only took 1 hour to install and the installer was professional and informative. This is the way to go if you need or run into battery issues. Thank GOD for companies like Green Tec Auto. I hope whomever has a battery issue, has one nearby because they saved me from buying a new car or purchasing from the STEALERSHIP!

Sod did the mechanic read the ODB2 dash CEL light - Even if the CEL on dash is not lit there maybe a Pending code for a better clue.

Any good mechanic would have done that - so if your guy did not - ya really gotta wonder about why not.

A typical hybrid battery code indicating problems is A080 and sometimes the Red Triangle of Death on the dash - guessing you did not see that .

Have not seen red triangle of death. Took it to Toyota dealer. Had them check.

I got frustrated and although my mechanic is good overall (he did not charge for code reading) he’s not a hybrid specialist. I ended up taking vehicle to a local dealership that had an available time slot. Was shown a P0A80 saying battery pack needs replacing. Looking into having it replaced by an independent instead of the dealership. They want $7,500 just for the battery not including labor. Told service guy nope. Have to wait until Monday to call (Green Tec). Hoping to see their cost for purchase and install. Car still drives, I’m just concerned that I’m driving on 12 volt battery. Not sure how long I can use until I either get a new battery pack or trade it in and get a new car. Dash display now shows yellow triangle and battery about 80% charged, but not recharging.

Traction battery going bad at 150k ? Car was driven everyday and the fan vent is clean? I have 2009 Prius with 155k on original battery.

The OEM battery costs like ~2.7K. If you are handy, you can replace 1 or 2 cells and keep going for few more years. Where are you located? This company -> https://www.texashybridbatteries.com/batteries replaces the Prius battery with OEM for $2250. Battery is like $1700s. So they charge only $500 for labor and 3 additional years of warranty. There are more companies like this. GreenTec - reviews are mixed. Who ever is doing it, make sure the fan is clean and works fine.

Get a proper scan tool like Autel MAXAP200 and get the actual codes. It may be something else in the charging circuit. Also try to drive in sports mode to engage engine more and charge the battery. See if any difference. Do not do the "Eco" mode.
