Needed the locker again today!

I went up a steep road covered in snow. I was actually the first one going up after a heavy snowstorm. It was fine in 4Hi until near the top. There is a gate and I had to stop for it to open. As soon as I stopped, I went backwards down the hill with the foot on the brake! The truck eventually stopped sliding after 15-20ft, and I tried to go up again through the gate. There was no way! The truck slid left and right while moving backwards down the road again.
Then I put it in 4lo and engaged the locker. That's when I was able to slowly make my way up. The wheels were still slowly spinning, but I was moving forward. It would not have been easy without the locker.

This is the third time in 3 years that I needed it. One time last year was very bad, I was at a snow trail in nomans land when my front wheels went into an invisible ditch while turning around. The truck was moving nowhere in 4WD, the left front and left rear wheels where spinning. With the locker, I got right out, pretty much doubling the traction (I don't think there was any traction in the front, as the front wheel was spinning in lose snow with the frame on the ground.

The bottom line: I am really happy I went with the TRD OR, especially on days like today!

Without the locker engaged and in 4WD (lo or hi) you get one front wheel and one rear wheel driving once you lose traction in most situations. When engaging the rear locker, you get another wheel helping out, basically having 3 wheels driving. 50% more traction essentially. It does help a lot in those critical situations.

an if you got an ARB air locker in the front you would have all 4, but really, how many times do most of us use the rear locker. there isn't much justification for F/R lockers unless you're off road a good bit. I've never had to use 4 lo, much less the locker, but its nice to know i have it just incase

True, but I had to use it 3 times already, of which one time the locker really saved the day. It would have been a major nightmare being stuck on a snow trail 15 miles from any major road with 2 kids in the truck. I am not doing any heavy offroading just for the sake of it, but still the locker came in handy a few times, and again today! Heck, it sure beats the hood scoop, which would not have helped much (I just had to say that, sorry!)!

oh i don't doubt you, i also have one, and i know exactly what you mean about being way back off the road, i've been back a few times (nothing serious, some gravel mainly, little mud here and there but really hilly) I had thought to myself, man im glad i have a locker, or else if i get stuck, boy will i be.

Also, given my location of offroading, that scene from deliverance could have become all too real

Hey, I agree with you, Cummins! I still like the colored door handles of the TRD Sport, don't care for the fake hood scoop (would probably trade it if I had one), but once both of those rear wheels are turning when you need it? .... priceless!!!

Sure, in a prerunner, your theoretical gain is twice the traction (100% gain), whereas in a 4WD it is 50% (3 wheels vs. 2). If I would ever buy a prerunner, it would have to be the TRD OR with the locker. In fact, sometimes you may be able to beat a 4WD with an open diff having that locker in the rear: The situation I was in (detailed above, about a year ago) with the front wheels being in a ditch,I am sure your prerunner with the locker would have done fine. Any 4WD with open diff would have been stuck forever! What got me out was the additional traction on the rear wheels with the locker. The 4WD itself was pretty much useless in that particular situation.

I've been debating swapping out my LSD rear end for a locker. Unfortunately its almost impossible to swap in the OffRoad rear end into the Sport because of the extra ECU and wiring. I don't want the Air Locker from ARB because I still enjoy having LSD in certain situations.

PowerTrax NoSlip here I come :D

not necessarily. Sometimes (usually critical times) the LSD isn't as tight as you would wish it to be.

Id rather have an LSD and a locker combined, like many other new trucks
The locker in our trucks is great but a pain to use it when driving on a slightly slippery trail many times one tire will start spinning on gravel lets say going up a slight hill and you have to go thru the routine of twisting the knob into 4x4, listening to all the whistles and alarms untill it finally engages then explaining to your passengers what is going o, since they think you are stuck on a gravel road? finding the locker button, by then you dont need it because the 4x4 got you out. Then undoing everything you just did.

I have been in countless situations were a rear LSD or posi trac would have got me out without any more input than hitting the throttle

I've had my TRD Off-Road for over a year now and never used my locker. Just recently I've used it twice and boy was I happy with it.

I went Boarding recently and got stuck on a road going up hill. My tires keep spinning and I slid back a few feet. I was scared out my mind because I felt helpless. I popped in the locker button and at first it spun a few times but kicked in. I slowly made my way up and out the mess.

Today I went wheeling with KOBANG and I tried to go up a small hill full of gravel. I couldn't get up and kicked in the LOCKER and presto, onto the trail.

I love the LOCKER and I look forward to using it more..

I have a mechanical LSD in my Isuzu. I'd rather have open differential than LSD. It is terrible on icy roads (which is 6 months out of the year for me).

I never planned on using mine, until yesterday when an idiot parked so close behind me I could not reverse at all, and there was a 15" snow bank that my front wheels were resting up against ahead of me. Put in in 4 high, wheels were just spinning. 4-lo, and punched it, and no result. Was surprised how easily 4-lo and the locker engaged... just neutral, clutch in, and bingo, I was in. Got the locker engaged, and presto, a rear tire got traction and kicked me sideways up onto the snow (I think the locker tire was resting on pavement), and afterwads just drove slowly off the side of it. My friends were pretty impressed. Never thought I'd use it, and in that situation a LSD probably would have worked also, but I will admit, the difference was amazing.

Just a question have any of you gone off roading in a sport model with LSD? I have the LSD and been in mud and snow on the brink of being stuck in bothin 4HI. When I push down on the skinny pedal, both of my rear tires spin. My truck has been stuck in snow sitting on the frame and both rear tires were spinning, only one front was spinning in 4 wheel drive.I think you would be impressed with toyota's LSD. On other note, I have been on dry ground in 2-wheel drive and had the rear left off the ground and that was the tire that spun. Since it was dry ground and I was messing around...I just click it in 4HI and drove away. Thought this might help someone trying to decide what to get.
