This new support program will give a free coolant bypass valve replacement for specified 5th gen RAV 4s when you get the dreaded "ENGINE maintenance required" MID screen warning. There is a NEW valve with a NEW PART # which hopefully is better than the old 16260-F0010 defective valve.

Good question. The CSP is so new we don't yet know all of its ramifications. We do NOT even have the new TSB for it. Also we do NOT know anything about the NEW Valve part # F0300 which replaces the old defective valve...who makes it; how is it different; whether it is an improvement and cures the problem permanently.

Only needed through the 2021 model.
Yes-there is quite a discussion about the FEB 2021 cut off date for free repairs in the RAV4World forum. The CSP says NO Rav4s manufactured AFTER FEB 2021 are covered! So once your Basic Warranty (3 years/36K miles) expires you are SCREWED if your coolant bypass valve fails in a car made after FEB 2021.

Not the case here. The coolant bypass valve used from the 2019 to early 2024 model years was part #16260-F0010. It was NEVER changed, improved or superseded. It was the same defective valve in all the cars. NOW in DECEMBER of 2024 with this new CSP we have a completely NEW VALVE...part #16260-F0300.

All the language in the CSP about leaking onto engine parts is BS! Here is what happens when the coolant bypass valve fails. There are two failure modes. The most common is that internally the valve sticks open and never closes. Then engine coolant will flow through the heater core EVEN if your air conditioner is turned on. That is why when you turn off the A/C the MID screen warning "engine maintenance required" also turns off. The second failure mode DOES involve a potential EXTERNAL leak. Coolant can flow from a hairline crack in the plastic valve and get into and corrode the electrical contacts where the wires attach to the bypass valve. No one, after years (since 2019) has EVER reported that the plastic bypass valve has ever actually split open and dumped coolant...which was always one of my big concerns. The brown rectangle in the second photo (between the hoses) are the corroded electrical connectors caused by hairline crack in the bypass valve.

Had this start yesterday. Thought it was a simple maintenance reset issue and was surprised when it wouldn’t reset. Plugged in the code scanner and nothing popped. Did some research online and learned about this problem, but was unaware of the warranty fix until I took it to the dealer this morning. They tell me it has to be looked at by their master technician, but should be a free fix. Toyota has it now, we shall see how it goes. 63k miles on a 2019RAV4.

"ENGINE maintenance required" on the MID screen always means the coolant bypass valve has failed. If you turn off the A/C the warning will disappear. There IS a code for the bypass valve-- DTC P 268115. You need a really good scan tool or the Toyota Techstream to find this code. It is NOT an engine code. It is a cabin code because technically the coolant bypass valve is part of the climate control and heating and A/C systems.

That's all true. Here is the REALLY interesting point...The Customer Support Program only applies to and gives a free coolant bypass valve replacement to gas models manufactured from 2019 through FEBRUARY 2021. NOTHING LATER!! So this indicates Toyota either KNEW there was a defect in the earlier production run of valves or a running change in production was made after FEB '21 without a parts# change. I have NOT seen any posters complain of a coolant bypass valve failure in a RAV made after Feb 2021 here, in RAV4World, or Reddit RAV4 Club.

Yeah, I saw that, and is all just a guess as to the nature of the recall vs what the actual cars parts conditions are. They likely tried to save money and fix as few parts as possible.

With the amount of plastic parts everywhere on this thing, I just don’t have a lot of confidence in the long term reliability.

recently took my car in due to "engine maintenance required" warning showing and they quoted me $900
Does this program offer a free coolant bypass valve replacement if so how do I go about it?
Yes the Customer Support Program gives a FREE coolant bypass valve replacement to owners in the US of 2019 RAV4s. Your dealer is a stupid, lying, rip off artist. Go to a different dealer. Print out a paper copy of the CSP in post #1 of this thread and take it to the dealer. Call Toyota Customer Support if a dealer gives you any problem about this CSP.

What's happening with my Rav4 now, upon start, even without the aircon, my dashboard is displaying the "Engine Maintenance Required.". With the fan or aircon on while running, it displays the message. However, when I stop the engine for a while and then turn it back on without the aircon/fan on, the notice disappears. My engine runs smoothly with or without the aircon, but I worry about how it will affect my car in the long run because Toyota does not want to address it until the error code shows up to justify their cost of repair.

but I worry about how it will affect my car in the long run
Don't worry. It has been proven you can drive your RAV4 safely for a long time with a malfunctioning and failed coolant bypass valve. There are many posts in the various RAV4 forums that 5th gen RAV owners (and 8th gen Camry owners) have driven for many months (some for years) with a bad valve. The car will NOT overheat. Just make sure there is no actual coolant leak coming out of the valve and the coolant reservoir is between the low and full marks. When the coolant bypass valve fails, the heater will always be putting out a little warm air even if the A/C is turned on. The bypass valve's purpose is to shut off coolant flow to that cabin heater when the A/C is on.

Correct. When starting a cold engine, the ECM sends a signal to close the coolant bypass valve to ensure the fastest possible engine warm-up.

However, when I stop the engine for a while and then turn it back on without the aircon/fan on, the notice disappears.
Because the coolant temperature is higher than that at which the ECM signals the coolant bypass valve to close.

I will check on the wire connection of the Coolant Bypass Valve and see how it goes.
If you have a multimeter check the resistance of the coolant bypass valve.
My failed valve has 4 Ohms of resistance instead of 22÷28 Ohms at 20⁰C.

If the 5th gen RAV is a model year covered by the CSP then YES it IS a free repair. Check the specified years. For gas models it is 2019 to FEB 2021 --no later cars. The date your car was made is on a plaque inside the driver's door jamb. To qualify for the free repairs the RAV MUST have the MID warning "ENGINE maintenance required" and the DTC codes specified in the CSP.

I have a 2019 Rav 4 that just started displaying the "engine maintenance required, see dealer" I took it in and the diagnosis was coolant bypass has short circuit. The dealer was going to fix it for free under the customer service program but they said Toyota main office denied the claim because it doesnt match THEIR code. A failure of this valve is a failure.....I dont understand why they wont cover it. Has anyone else had this?

#42 ·
The same thing happened to my 2019 Rav4 when I had it checked by the dealer; they returned it to me without any changes. Their reason was that they did not see the error code to justify the replacement with Toyota. I was advised that once the error code shows up then they will fix it free of charge. But for now, I just have to keep watching my thermostat changes while driving or replace it myself at my cost

Mine is showing a code, just not the code they want to see lol

If the "Engine Maintenance Required" warning is on the MID, then you guys MUST have a DTC. WHAT DTCs DO YOU HAVE...what did the dealer find? The Customer Support Program and its Technical Service Bulletin REQUIRE you to have either or both DTC P268111 or P268115 in order to qualify for the free repairs.

I fought it and the reason I was given for it not being covered is that it’s electrical. My hose isn’t leaking. What’s the difference??? My coolant valve is faulty on a 20K car with a known history of issues for that part. If I wait until the hose busts, then it will be covered. Mind blown.
